Hello,

I am planning on finally upgrading my 6-7 year old gaming pc but I needed some advice beforehand. I currently have an i7-3770k cpu, 2x sli gtx 550ti, and 16gb ddr3 ram. I just recently purchased a gtx 1070 founders edition which is arriving really soon but in the meantime I needed to know if it was worth upgrading my cpu and ram. I didnt find much comparisons of older gen cpu's compared to say a 7th gen i7 so i wasnt really sure if it was worth dropping $350 on a new chip. I also could not tell the difference between ddr3 ram and ddr4 ram and if it is also worth the upgrade especially with current ram prices which are through the roof.

My main goal in upgrading my pc is being able to run whatever I throw at it with no problems. I am also planning on buying a 144hz monitor which I hope my pc would be good enough to use the monitors capabilities. thank you so much for your time and advice!

Honestly, it depends on the processor. The new generation won't work with your current motherboard. But if you aren't going the latest route it should be fine. As far as ram DDR4 is better as it starts at a higher speed, actually at the highest DDR3 went to.

If you're buying a 1080p 144Hz monitor, an upgrade to a Coffee Lake i5 or i7 would be a nice upgrade. That said, a 3770k is still perfectly adequate and you're looking at $500 for an 8600k with a Z370 mobo and 8GB DDR4.

Get your new monitor first and if you're noticing a CPU bottleneck in any games you play, you can consider an upgrade to Coffee Lake.
