Rohingya children have been beheaded and civilians burned alive, according to witness testimony amid claims that Burma's military and paramilitary forces are committing "genocide" or a "pogrom" against the Muslim minority in the countrys western Rakhine state.
Around 60,000 refugees are believed to have fled over the countrys western border into Bangladesh in a just a week following a clampdown on Rohingya militants.

The British Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, called for the violence to end, saying the treatment of the Rohingya was besmirching the reputation of Burma, also known as Myanmar, and appealing to Aung San Suu Kyi to act.
Turkey's President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has gone much further, accusing Burma's forces of genocide and saying those who turned a blind eye to events were complicit.

Observers believe the number of displaced people is likely to increase. The Burmese military said 400 militants had been killed in clashes with their forces.
Civilians who escaped gave horrific accounts of violence and destruction by Burmese soldiers and other armed groups.

A man named as Abdul Rahman, 41, said he had survived a five-hour attack on Chut Pyin village.
He told Fortifiy Rights, a charity working in the area, that a group of Rohingya men had been rounded up and detained in a bamboo hut, which was then set on fire.
"My brother was killed, [Burmese soldiers] burned him with the group, he said.
We found [my other family members] in the fields. They had marks on their bodies from bullets and some had cuts.
"My two nephews, their heads were off. One was six years old and the other was nine years old. My sister-in-law was shot with a gun.

Another man from the same village, named as Sultan Ahmed, 27, told the charity: Some people were beheaded, and many were cut. We were in the house hiding when [armed residents from a neighbouring village] were beheading people.
"When we saw that, we just ran out the back of the house.

Survivors from other villages in the region also described seeing people being beheaded or having their throats cut.
"We cant stress enough the urgency of the situation," said Matthew Smith, head of Fortify Rights.
"The Myanmar authorities are failing to protect civilians and save lives. International pressure is critically needed."

I hate posting here now because of the amount of people who use topics like this just to get their post count up, but for the people who actually care about seeing important news stories that might not be on their radar, this is for you.

This is a genocide, and if it isn't one now then it will be soon enough because it doesn't seem like anything is being done to stop this violence.
At the very least the US and other major countries should put economic sanctions on Myanmar and at the very most UN peacekeepers should be deployed.

It's a damn strange world when I actually agree with Erdogan on anything he says...

I really have not heard about much going on Myanmar, either it just simply isn't being shown in news articles or I may have missed it. I would agree it's a genocide -- at the very least it's definitely ethnic killing/attempt at ethnic cleansing. I will be honest, I know very little of this region but because the article mentions Rohingya are the ones being killed instead of Burmese people being killed, this is why I mention an ethnic killing/cleansing is taking action; whether or not someone wants to argue it being genocide or not is up to them, but I feel it's both happening. I would not doubt if Burmese people are eventually brought into the crossfire for hiding Rohingya or helping them escape if any choose to do so.

So with what's going on in Myanmar, is this along the lines of what Duterte is doing in the Philippines? Martial Law with the military given a shoot to kill order (in this case, just barbaric killing,) under the claim of killing ISIS/extremist; while also killing off a certain ethnic/religious group, even if they're civilians?

This is also shitty using one incident for another, but why is this getting labeled as genocide or "ruled as possible genocide/pogrom" when Yemen (as far as I know/have seen) has not been recognized as any sort of genocide within the country? Pretty sure bombing a certain ethnic group, trapping them with no escape, blowing their sea ports and crops and literally starving them to death is a type of genocide.

I felt the same about Erdogan's statement. He finally made sense on something.

It's sort of like what Duterte is doing except there's no false pretense here. They aren't hiding what they are doing or who they are targeting. They are killing them because they see them as illegals, and there is obviously going to be a lot of religious hatred here with the Rohingya's being Muslim and the militias involved being Buddhists.

The Government is claiming that the Rohingya's have been killing Buddhists and Hindus, but even if that were the case that doesn't justify burning entire villages and beheading fleeing children.

As for Yemen, I honestly think it's because people don't want to take the time to understand the Middle East right now.
I think a lot of people look at the Middle East and see the names of countries and just think, "I don't know who is right or wrong here, but I know that whatever is happening is wrong."

It's like if you ask people to give you their opinion on Israel Vs Palestine, you're probably not going to get a straight answer.
Similarly, if you ask people their opinion about Yemen, they probably think, "Well what did they do to deserve it? There must be more to the story here... I need to do more research."
Whereas there's very little confusion about Myanmar, it's an easier situation to understand so people are more open to labeling it a genocide, pogrom, etc.

Obviously not everyone is like this and there are a lot of people calling the conflict in Yemen what it is - a genocide - but I think the confusion around the Middle East is making people doubt everything they hear about conflicts in that area.

This doesn't really absolve people who aren't laymen and whose job it is to understand politics in these areas, but I think we both know that most of these people shouldn't really be this position.

I read about a story where a man actually went back into the country to get his brother and his brother's wife (who was pregnant) bodies after they were murdered by the militia; he said he couldn't leave their bodies behind and thought they needed a burial.

It's sad to read about these stories and realize that things will probably just get worse for these people; this IS genocide and it should be treated as such

My friend who I went to highschool with and worked with for many years took his own life by smoke asphyxiation and burned himself to death as he was unconscious. It was an incredibly sad candlelight vigil.

I can not imagine witnessing this with my own eyes. I mourn for these families.

Thank you for sharing such an emotional story.
