A van has ploughed into crowds in Barcelona's Ramblas tourist area.
Spanish police say several people have been injured in a "massive crash", while emergency services are urging people to stay away from the area around Plaa Catalunya.
Reports from the scene say people are taking cover in nearby shops and cafes.
Reuters news agency reports that emergency services have requested the closure of local metro and train stations.
Marc Esparcia, a 20-year-old student who lives in Barcelona, told the BBC: "There was a loud noise and everybody ran for cover. There were a lot people, lots of families [at the site], this is one of the most visited sites in Barcelona.
"I think several people were hit. It was horrible, there was panic. Terrible."
He said he was now taking cover inside a Starbucks coffee shop.

Sigh. It saddens my heart so deeply whenever one of these terrible attacks happens. Something has to be done IMMEDIATELY to try and prevent these attacks but sadly, you really can't regulate who gets a van and who doesn't without "racial profiling".

The videos of people running away from the scene of the attack on Twitter are heartbreaking. People enjoying their damn day and some nutjob with a boner for an extremist religion decides to maim and quite possibly kill a few innocent bystanders. I'm sure ISIS is soon to claim their responsibility in this attack.

Fingers crossed its over as soon as possible and the death toll is kept to a minimum.

Seen a few photos and a video of the scene, awful images. Disgusted that the pedestrianised strip that was attacked has no ostacles, barriers, no nothing to slow or stop vehicles entering, it's about 30ft+ wide with very little for the vehicle to crash into but pedestrians.

Considering the past 2 years; especially the past months in Europe you would expect barriers to be erected especially in densely populated pedestrian area's.

So far the death toll is at 2 but is expected to rise. The videos I have seen show some horrific injuries.

Shockingly poor environmental design unfortunately and as you said, you would expect barriers to have been erected with attacks in the surrounding nations. Someone will be getting fired once this is all over.

Something that also gets to me is how insensitive society has become towards events like this. Whenever there's one of these terror attacks, some people go and try to help the victims as much as they can before the correct medical assistance gets to the scene; but some people whip out their phone and start RECORDING the scenes of gruesome injuries and possible deaths. I know this is the technological era we live in, but come on. These are people injured and possibly DYING of their injuries and people record them during this awful time? I understand that it's a way to inform the rest of the world of the events that are happening but I believe that it's not showing respect towards the people in question.

It's kind of a double-edged blade in the sense. Photos and videos of the incident can help uncover what happened, it's extra evidence for the police and in the rare instance that the people recording happen to get images of the suspect(s) it helps out tremendously. The whole thing about it being respectful is debatable. I think if the person is dying and they're being forcefully moved around to get a more "shocking" image/video for a news headline, then yeah, absolutely disrespectful, but documenting what happened to inform the authorities, inform the world of what's happening so there can be discussions to attempt to prevent an incident like this; at the very least minimise the toll if/when it happens again, I can see as respectful as that person(s) are now going to be what will/may help going forward to try and prevent this incident.

On top of that, there's only so much certain people can do. There is a thing as "too much." There can be too many people working at once to save a person which can end up causing a conflict of what is being done and end up killing the same person they're trying to save. A scenario I can think of is someone is crushed by a car into a building, the car and building are what are keeping their innards in place, moving that car will likely kill them without a trained professional medical team (even then that's a long shot) but now you have a bunch of people scrambling and panicking trying to figure out what to do and one person decides to try and save them by moving the car, killing them on the spot because no one else there knew what the hell to do. Another one could be someone has a knife stabbed in their stomach. You have people trying to figure out what to do and one person decides to remove the knife and the person ends up bleeding out. It's a tough call, but sometimes a person recording the incident is the right thing to do. It might not morally be the right thing to do, but if more people adds onto the confusion of what to do; no one has a clue how to really help, then it's best to assess the situation and let the few people who have some knowledge of this incident and let them do their what they can until the train professionals can jump on the scene. An example I will give, is when I was in highschool, a classmate almost choked to death chewing on a pen cap. 12 people rushed to her aid and argued with each other what the best course of action was going to be. 12 people is not needed for someone choking, 1, 2 maybe 3 is enough. Finally someone got through and helped her properly but everyone else was just in the way, causing a further problem by arguing what the best course of action was. That's just an unfortunate part of an incident like this. I do agree, people should call the authorities first and if they KNOW they will get in the way and hamper any efforts of saving someone, be that they're in a panic and can't think straight or their knowledge and ability of what to do will cost someone their life, then recording the incident for documentation may be the best course of action. Like I said, it's a tough, unfortunate situation from the incident that you only have seconds to act upon.
