The Las Vegas Golden Knights Expansion Draft Is Upon Us!

Today, the protected/exposed players lists were revealed by all other 30 NHL teams. Vegas must choose 1 player from each team (14 Forwards, 9 Defence & 3 Goaltenders minimum) with their selections being made public on Wednesday, 21st.

Now, you would assume teams would expose their depth and bottom end players to ensure they do not risk weakening their team significantly, however, teams had to meet certain exposure requirements in order to allow Vegas a chance at securing some decent players. In the spoiler below, is the rules regarding players teams expose.

With such rules being in place, as previously mentioned, there are some good players available for Vegas to select come Wednesday and in the spoiler below are some of the highlights!

Marc-Andre Fleury

An inevitable possibility for Vegas after waiving the no-movement clause in his contract, the Pittsburgh Penguins goalie has long been projected to land with the Golden Knights. The Pens wanted to keep Matt Murray, and now Fleury could resume No. 1 backstopping duties with a new-market team looking to make a splash. He's got the stuff to be "the guy" in the net right out of the gate.

James Neal

Like Fleury, Neal could be part of a sudden transition from Stanley Cup Final contender to expansion-team asset. His name is notable in part because his Nashville Predators teammate Colton Sissons also made it onto his team's unprotected list, leaving Vegas with a potential choice between the two forwards. Throw in Pontus Aberg and all of a sudden the Golden Knights have a crack at three different goal-scoring options from this year's runners-up.

Jonathan Marchessault

A bargain possibility with underrated upside, Marchessault was the Florida Panthers' headliner in 2016-17, tallying 30 goals in a 75-game breakout season. Somehow he's up for grabs. Vegas may have the steal of the expansion draft just waiting to be embraced in Marchessault, who could still have immense trade value considering his youth, contract and surge in production.

Eric Staal

With Jason Zucker sticking around for now, the Minnesota Wild opted to expose Staal to Vegas. So the Golden Knights will have a shot at landing another aging, albeit productive, goal scorer. The 32-year-old Staal appeared in all 82 games in 2016-17, the first time he's done that in six years, and went over 20 goals for the ninth time in his career. His salary isn't outrageous for what he's doing at center, either.

Bobby Ryan

Three years removed from a lucrative $50-million contract, the Ottawa Senators forward headlines the big-money curiosities that Vegas could absorb. Much like soon-to-be free agents such as T.J. Oshie and Kevin Shattenkirk, Ryan's contract probably stands most in the way of an expansion-draft acquisition. But the Sens winger followed up an underwhelming 2016-17 regular season with a hot streak in the playoffs and still owns a notable resume.

What does everyone think of the exposed lists, and the potential new arrivals in Vegas?

Jesus, what the hell is Detroit doing? They protect Howard (although I think he has a NMC) but don't protect Mrazek. Unless they have a deal with Vegas to not pick him then idk what they are doing.

Anyways, apparently Vegas already has 4+ 1sts from salary dumps and promising to not pick a teams certain player(s). Nuts. ED makes everything more fun tho imo.

I saw something yesterday saying they exposed Mrazek due to 'attitude issues' and that he isn't someone they want In Detroit.

It shouldn't be too much of a worry for Red Wings fans who do like Mrazek though. Vegas will take Fleury as Starter then maybe even an aging guy like Luongo as backup, take the salary hit for a season or two then bring up whoever they select as 3rd String from the AHL or any Goaltender they Draft.

They won't take Luongo, not with that cap hit. Definitely a young goaltender like Grubauer or Raanta to build their team around and then taking one in the draft to develop.

That's definitely the logical way to go about it but they've got to ensure they're above the Cap Floor which may see them take on some undesirable contracts temporarily.

Only way I see them taking Luongo is for picks to take on the cap hit or if someone wants him which I doubt but it would be cool to see him in a Canucks uniform.

It's rumoured that Vegas have selected/received:

Erik Haula + Alex Tuch from Minnesota. Haula was unprotected, Tuch is part of a deal made between the clubs so long as they didn't select Matt Dumba and Marco Scandella and center Eric Staal. Vegas will have to give up a Conditional Draft Pick as part of the deal also.

Shea Theodore - Anaheim

Mikhail Grabovski - New York Islanders

All shall be confirmed tonight! With some of numerous trades between Vegas and other teams also being revealed.

Honestly, that's a good move by Anaheim.Theodore is an amazing prospect and all but not worth keeping over Vatanen and Manson, and they gave up a 1st in 2018 too I think.

Yup, so looks like they are building their team around Fleury right now. Good choice. Those 1sts will help them big time too.
