The anime was only 16 chapters but it'll have to be more than 12 episodes during the next one.

Update on the anime - Season 3 is expected to air in July 2018 according to Yonkou, who I believe has never been wrong with his leaks as with a key visual being released. Also worth mentioning we'll be getting 3 OVA's of Attack on Titan called Lost Girls.
