Before getting into my review, I want to state that I have posted a review on this game in the Steam Reviews; which I will attach a link to the review as well as my Steam profile to prove (I mention my TTG account name on my Steam profile.) I will be using a lot of copy paste from my review on Steam; however I will be going more in depth on almost everything since there isn't a TTG character limit - as far as I'm aware unlike on Steam.

NieR:Automata

Platforms: PlayStation 4 and PC
Release Dates: March 7th, 2017 (PlayStation) | March 17th, 2017 (PC)
Genre: Open World Action RPG
Developer: PlatinumGames
Publisher: Square Enix
Director: Yoko Taro

Summary

NieR:Automata is an Open World Action RPG, that really brings it's true potential through story telling and the music that is packed throughout the game. NieR carries pieces of Hack and Slash, Bullet Hell, and Sci-Fi genres throughout the game if any of those are of interest to you. This game is a sequel to the original NieR released in 2010 however it is not a direct sequel as you don't need to play the original NieR to understand this game at all; instead there are a few tidbits here and there but that won't stop you from enjoying this game at all or feeling out of the loop.

Story

In my Steam Review I mentioned I wouldn't spoil anything, I will be doing that here, however it will be in a spoiler and this is only to get my point across from how deep the story actually hits. The story starts off about a war between androids who were humanity's last hope and machines who were created by aliens. Humanity had to escape to the moon in order to survive and sent androids to rid the machines and aliens so life on Earth can resume once again. As you progress through the game, you will see how deep it really begins to hit, how little things that seemed insignificant at first actually play a deeper role in the meaning of the story. Yoko Taro did a fantastic job at a story that really toys with the "what does it mean to be human" aspect and that made the story that much stronger and hold a bigger connection with it. You honestly go on a roller coaster of emotions throughout the whole story and you start to see how little words at the start of the game that just seem like banter actually carry so much weight as you get further, especially towards the end.

In this spoiler bar, these are spoilers for pretty much the whole game. If you don't plan on playing the game, I would suggest reading it so you can see how the story actually starts to hit deep; if you plan to play the game, please avoid this area as I promise you the story is so worth it.

As I mentioned above the game starts off simple enough, androids vs machines in an a battle for the fate of the world and the human race; however that all starts to quickly change as you're suddenly thrown into the question of "what defines a human." That question is not directly asked in the game but as you progress you start seeing things that a machine shouldn't be able to comprehend and that's emotions and self conscience. Very early on in the game you encounter a mini boss of mass machine hordes who at the end of the battle end up forming a cocoon and giving birth to a new machine who is the next step of the evolutionary chain of machines. He looks exactly like a human, emotions and thoughts like a human would. Upon "killing him" another machine is born, which is his brother and both take the name Adam and Eve to signify that they are the first of their kind; just as Adam and Eve are referred to the first of their kind in religion. Later as you go through the game there is a boss that wants to be seen as beautiful for the machine she loves; however he ignores her and it causes her to snap, killing androids and wearing them to satisfy her own lust for beauty to earn her lovers approval. Where the story really starts to kick off the "what defines a human" is a side quest in which there are 3 robots all in very high places who will not speak or move at all. You can hack into them to reveal their thought process where they are questioning why they were born, what their purpose is, how their purpose doesn't give them any approval, how the world is painful and one even going as far to ask why no one will help him; that very same machine ends up jumping off the high area in a suicide to escape his own pain. As you near the first ending of the game (the first 2 endings are the exact same story just told form different character perspectives) you will fight Adam in a battle. Before that Adam talks about his thoughts on humans based off all books he's read from the old world and from evolving as much as he has. He begins discussing the human way of love, hate, how we fight with each other, how we steal, yet how we cherish each other and how humans evolved from conflict. He also mentions about how hate/anger are the true emotions of humans, how it will bring out the strongest will in a person based off of previous human history. This becomes very apparent after killing him as his brother Eve becomes lost in his own hate and rage for the death of his brother at your own hands, the hate actually consumes his whole body, so much so that the hate he feels connects to the machine network and causes machines to attack each other because of it. After you finish the first 2 endings, shit really hits the fan and is where the story develops unlike anything I've seen in a game. On your 2nd ending you learn that humanity has actually been wiped out long ago, that all androids were told a continuous lie about humanity so they don't lose motivation about the people they're supposed to protect; the character you're playing as keeps that to himself and doesn't mention it to anyone else. Following the events of Ending A and B, you are sent back to Earth to finish up and kill all the machines as now they are all free from the network and unstable, soon things go south and they start releasing EMPs which trigger a virus in all androids. The virus was always there and is actually on purpose to infect all androids. You go back to the bunker to report the infection, only to be suspected of the only ones actually infected and everyone begins to turn on you; until they themselves get infected. After you fight your way through that, your commander is infected and orders for 2B and 9S to leave while she blows up the Bunker, herself and everyone who was infected. At this point is where everything falls in on itself. 2B herself becomes infected and is stranded upon escaping, you have to wander to a destination far away from any androids so you won't infect them, only to watch yourself dying slowly as you make your way there, before just barely getting there you are attacked and saved by another character who grants you your wish to kill you. 9S sees 2B killed in front of him and starts to snap, his mentality breaks down completely and begins a hate purge, just like Eve did. At this point in the story, characters that grew as a relationship between 2B and 9S are almost all killed, characters that acted like friends and parents to you are killed painfully because of a planned lie that is used to keep the war between machines and androids and a never ending stalemate. As you further progress you witness a machine village that is completely pacifist, who works towards peace, overrun by the same machines that Eve created, killing almost the whole village. The village leader escapes with all the children to an abandon factory and more machines begin to swarm the perimeter to kill them, the children are so struck with fear that the village leader breaks his pacifist ways and partners up with you to go on a machine genocide to kill the attackers and protect the last of his village. After surviving that, you and the leader go back into the factory to tell everyone it is safe, only to find they committed mass suicide out of fear of what would happen to them. The leader has a break down as he was the one who promised them they would play soon, that he would always protect them and because he taught them emotions and what it would be like if they were human, fear was one of them which allowed them to gain the self idea of suicide. He then asks you to kill him or completely wipe his memory and force him to be a whole new machine as he doesn't want to live with this heartbreak anymore. Continuing further on, 9S learns he has been killed by 2B multiple times and had his memory wiped whenever he discovered the truth about the virus, and about the planned never ending war between machines and androids. He starts to realize why she was always so cold with him because 2B doesn't want to get attached again when she will have to kill him again as fate goes. This causes him to further deteriorate mentally as he's in his own power struggle of wanting to get revenge, but also forgiving her because he knows she cares and wanted a different path for him; her death was her hopeful will that he would be free to choose and live a different path but her orders are still embedded within her sword which was taken by her mercy killer. Nearing the end of Ending C and D it is told that machines and androids need each other for a never ending war in order to evolve into the new humans for Earth. Once the androids become too powerful, the virus that has been laying dormant activates and wipes them all out, only for them to be rebuilt by the machines and forcing the machines to evolve further to combat the androids. Adam and Eve were the greatest example of what is trying to be accomplished to become the new humans of Earth. You also learn that the final area is a rocket that is aimed at the moon to destroy all the human memories and database, while others believe it's a rocket aimed to kill the humans on the moon since they don't know the truth. As the final boss, depending on what route you choose, you play as 2B's killer and set 9S free from his rage by hacking his memory and he learns to forgive 2B and to continue on the free path she set for him; you have 9S sent to safety while you yourself choose to perish and escape your own torment as everything begins to fall apart. If you choose to play as 9S during this, you kill 2B's killer, but because her orders are embedded in the sword you are being fought against with, you are fated to die by it, and you do, you ended up being impaled and dying on the ground with your memories starting to fade, but instead Adam appears in your memories and tells you that the final area is actually an ark, to send all the machines memories to the moon so they can live together as equals through their memories or so machine and android memories can find a new world to co-exist on. He shows no malice in asking the question as they don't have a reason to hate or fight each other, when in their physical forms and connected to the network they were simply following their orders and what they felt was needed. Ending E is the true ending, which shows 2B, 9S and 2B's killer being rebuilt, their memories all intact and now in hopes to be free to choose the life they want instead of being bound by chains set to their life.

Gameplay

Gameplay is very Hack and Slash with the enjoyment of an open world. There are Bullet Hell aspects in both the open world and in certain other situations. The gameplay reminds me of both Dark Souls and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in terms of how it's played. As with most RPG/JRPG games, as you level up you gain better items, better stats and enemies become harder, except this time enemies scale with you. Enemy scaling does depend on the difficulty and if you're not stupidly over-leveled. If you're on Easy mode and level 30-ish before the 3rd boss, enemies are going to be around the level 20 range, however if you're on Very Hard enemies will be around your level and maybe a few levels higher. As you progress through the story, enemies from previous areas will as well scale with your level. The game does have some grind to it for items to level up your weapons and your Pod Unit(s) but honestly, if you're someone who just wants to speed run the game, you can easily keep it on Easy mode and keep the Auto-Chips in to breeze past it. These will let you auto evade attacks, auto heal when needed, ect. That really takes a lot away from the game in my opinion but if you want to speed run the game, that will be your best option. A very interesting feature that I love in this game is when connected to the Network. This allows it so any players that died in that area, you will find their bodies. From there you can retrieve their bodies to gain some gold and 3 temporary buffs to stats. You can also repair their body to have an extra ally to help you with enemies and bosses. They last until they run out of damage, a certain amount of time passes or you just run way too far ahead of them and they can't keep up.

Controls

Since the game is a really reliant on Hack and Slash, I found using the controller easier than a mouse and keyboard as it allows me to button mash for combos while still being allowed to move around freely and do what I need to do. Your Pod Units do fire however they are not your primary attack and on easy mode they have an auto lock on feature. In other modes you just press one button and it locks onto an enemy for you and then you must fire the Pod Unit yourself as well as attack the enemy with your normal attacks. You can freely fire the Pod Unit for enemies too far to lock onto which is easy with the controller. It's not an FPS so you don't need to be crazy accurate in hitting an enemy. In this game you can freely bind your controller buttons to mimic what you want but I was personally using Type B which consisted of these controls.

(Xbox Controller)

A Button = Jump
X Button = Light Attack
Y Button = Heavy Attack
B Button = Action
RB = Dash
RT = Fire (Pod Unit fire)
LB = Lock On
LT= Pod Unit special
D-Pad Up = Switch weapon loadouts
D-Pad Down = Use items
D-Pad Left = Switch Pod Unit programs
D-Pad Right = Switch Pod Unit programs

Graphics

The graphics for this game were absolutely beautiful. From the crisp feel of the grassland, to how clear the water looks, excellent lens flair from the sun and overall textures of your surroundings. NieR:Automata perfectly captured the feel of a Post-Apocalyptic setting while also displaying vibrant areas of how nature would flourish without humans. The overall world of NieR has beautiful graphics that really set the mood for what is happening at that moment and when just freely walking around and enjoying the view.

Here are a few screenshots from in game on 4k. The PC port has had issues, with it apparently being locked at 900p no matter your monitor size. While my game is in 4k, my Steam Overlay seems to be 900p so I don't know if that impacts the photo quality, originally I thought I didn't have this issue but if my Steam Overlay is a lower resolution, I suspect I am up-scaled until it's fixed, so I downloaded Borderless Gaming and set it to 4k borderless but I still don't know if it's the true 4k quality it should be (all settings are maxed out.) I am also using other sites other than Imgur because Imgur's compression is ridiculous. No clue how these sites compression is, but it looks a lot better than Imgur does; last 2 images look a little compressed so not sure how much justice it does. To see full screen images, right click and "view image." These also might take a little to load, they're literally around 9-13 MB per image (sorry TTG lol)

Soundtrack

This soundtrack was phenomenal. I can't think of a single piece of music from this game that I didn't like. I am honestly one of the people who hate vocals in game music, except for at the credits and maybe cutscenes, but then I played this game and the vocals with the music blew me away. I really love the idea they did with the music where it will change based on the mood of the game, whether it's a scripted event or just completing a quest. A quest or scripted event will change based on the mood of that moment. It's fantastic and it makes the game have a stronger connection as during those moments you see how music can quickly change your overall mood within the game and have a sense of what's going to happen next.

Here are two of my favourite soundtracks from the game so you can see for yourself.

Conclusion

- Fantastic story that has a deep meaning behind it and really sucks you into the world of NieR. A very serious, touching and at times has it's funny moments.

- Music that keeps the mood and setting of the game which further delivers the experience to you and makes the moment feel more alive that it would be without the music.

- Beautiful graphics that really shine no matter where you're at in the world, giving you a whole new outlook on what is around you at those times and scenery you won't forget.

- Gameplay was a perfect mix of adventure, attacking and of course story telling. Enemies scale with your level and the world around you changes as time goes on.

- 2B's thighs tho

NieR was the perfect game for me. Honestly it messed me up after finishing what routes, I would even say it put me in a depression but not in a "bad way" (I know that sounds condescending.) After almost 100% finishing the game I feel in my heart I won't find a game to match this story. I have never felt connected to a story at all, especially on an emotional level, but NieR honestly went above and beyond my exceptions with everything that came with it. It has easily become one of, if not my favourite game. I am having withdrawals from the game as I want to restart it all and enjoy the story, but at the same time I want to let it have it's time then return back to it eventually to relive it all again. It's a game I will always cherish to own and be a part of. The story, gameplay, music. Perfect couldn't be a better word. Yoko Taro did a fantastic job at putting you on an emotional roller coaster and on Reddit, some people even praised him as a writer stating this is what true literature would manifest to be when it came to games and I wholeheartedly agree. He let the characters write the story and wrote with them in mind, instead of writing the story and forcing the story to adapt.

Rating

Gameplay: 10/10
Graphics: 10/10
Controls: 10/10
Soundtrack: 10/10
Overall Score: 10/10

*Side note, PC does have some porting issues, which was covered in my Steam Review, that didn't take away the experience from me as I didn't have most of those problems and the ones I did have didn't kill the story, gameplay or music for me. Other people would rate a game lower for a porting issue like this and I understand that but personally I had nothing that impacted gameplay so it's a perfect 10 for me.

well, didnt even have to play the game I guess. Just had to read the story and I knew everything about the game

Probably one of the most well written reviews on the site man. I hear so many good things about this game, might have to give it a try.

I would definitely try the game out if you get the chance. I did mention pretty much the story but I really didn't touch the side quests and there were parts of the story that I really just couldn't put into words, so they are really lack luster in explanation or I just didn't include it. I'm no where near a writer and I can't get into the mind of Yoko Taro and explain what he wrote properly. You will easily understand what is being portrayed in the game off the story telling but trying to write it out is rather hard - at least for me because I can't match what a writer can create. Like I said in the review, he let the characters write the story with their feelings in mind instead of forcing the characters to adapt to the story he wanted; which is honestly a true showing of an excellent writer. If you decide to play the game, almost every little dialog is important, it starts to show on the last 3 endings.

Also just a tip, you get a side quest later about eating a mackerel, don't eat it unless you save your game and even then you don't have to eat it. There are joke endings in this game and eating the mackerel, kills you, triggering that specific ending, so if you don't save then you lose a few hours...like I did lol. There's 26 endings, ending A-E are the story endings with ending E being the real one. F-Z are joke endings or endings from you messing up such as running away during an important/urgent event or not stopping something before a timer wears out.

This game looks really good, I think I'm actually going to pick it up for PC. I really wish they had it for Xbox one, but that's a different story. I'm not the biggest player of hack and slash games but might as well give this a shot, so thank you for putting the spoilers in an actual spoil. Hopefully it comes out on the steam summer sale!
