Actually I think this does and doesn't work. Me and my friends did this exact thing for GTA V. Not to mention that was fair while ago. But yeah, I got on the game fine at midnight and so did one of my friends but the other two had to download the whole thing again when they tried to load it at midnight.

You on Xbox by any chance? As the_soggy said, it'll download the game automatically like a week before release (although I believe your console has to be to 'instant on'), so yours could have downloaded without you realizing. I remember I had the same with BO3, I literally launched it at midnight with no issues.
