I'm getting my first car soon and i'm just wondering if you guys have any suggestions, since its my first car and i'll probably end up crashing it I don't want to spend more than 5,000 on it. I'm just looking for something reliable. it will definitely be an older car because of the price range, but I don't know what brands and models to look at. If you have and recommendations they would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Also im in the US

Look @ some subaru's and audi's they've been noted to be pretty reliable.

You just picked the two highest maintenance vehicles as "Reliable". Audis are notorious for problems and subarus are only good if youre CONSTANTLY keeping up with their maintenance. Which is still more often than any other brand.

Good for you understanding what a first vehicle is about lol.

Honestly, there is no good or bad vehicle when it comes down to that price range because they will all be old and you're just hoping to find one that will last a little bit.

My recomendation to you is just go around to dealership lots, find a vehicle style you like, go home and research it a little bit and find out if those are problems you can live with. Then go look for the vehicle on dealer lots or private party people, and before you even discuss price, HAVE A MECHANIC CHECK IT OVER. I'm not talking let uncle fill look for leaks, I'm saying spend the 100 dollars and have it compression tested, make sure the gears in the tranny are fine, etc. If the person won't let you do this, just assume there's something wrong with the car they don't want you to see and walk away.

I made a couple threads you should take a look at:

haha such good recommendations. Clearly know nothing about cars and just looking to get them young posts up.

Not sure which country you live in but generally can't go bad with japanese cars. reliable, cheap and easy to find parts for whether they genuine or after market.

Something big? maybe like an older hilux. Things last for ever.
Sedan? camry's, civics, pulsars (altimas).

Basically anything that is 6 cylinder or 4 cylinder and japanese. If you live in america your dometic cars will probably all be cheap and fairly reliable and easy to find parts for but I don't know anything about usa cars.

Volkswagen Golf Mk 5 defo something to consider. Ive had 2 and one was my first car. Definitely an awesome drive and very reliable. Good ones can be bought around 3500-4500 so your well in the price range. Mk 5 golf - 04-09 year.
