The Commissioner (Met. Police), Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe and the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan have today announced the start of Operation Hercules in which additional firearms officers will be deployed in visible roles in the capital. A total of 600 addition firearms trained officers will be deployed over the next 2 years.

What is Operation Hercules?

Hercules is part of the Mets commitment to delivering extra armed officers to protect London against the threat of terrorism. The Mayor has welcomed the Commissioner's increase of 600 additional firearms officers to protect London against any attack. The first are now fully trained and operationally ready.

The public will see more armed officers, working alongside their neighbourhood and specialist colleagues, on proactive operations and targeted patrols, both on foot and in vehicles, across London.

The Aim?

The operation is not based on any specific intelligence but is a long term response to best use the increasing number of armed officers the Met has to make London as hostile an environment as possible for any would-be attacker. That means the locations, types of tactics and the numbers of officers deployed at once will continually change to be most effective and avoid predictability.

What's Being Said?

Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, said:

Anyone who's been following events in Europe over the past few weeks will understand why we want to show our determination to protect the public. We are deadly serious about the protection that we are offering the people of London and we will never be complacent.

That's why Im increasing the visibility and the number of armed officers on London's streets, and demonstrating some of the range of tactics we already have to protect the public from all manner of threats.

I want the public to know that we have substantial resources and a range of tactics that we can call on to protect them.

The reality of having to deal with armed and deadly attackers is that you need firearms officers who will use force to stop those attackers in their aim. Our firearms officers are the ones who will run towards the danger. They are our heroes.

Despite the fact they are carrying guns they are still police officers and I want the public to approach and talk to them, they are out on our streets to reassure and help the public.

Equally important in how we protect our capital is the relationship that our mainly unarmed officers have built with communities over many years. Our communities are a vital source of information and if you have fears or concerns then we want to know.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, added: "The safety and security of all Londoners is my first priority, and our police and security services are working incredibly hard every day on our behalf.

"The threat level here in London has not changed, but it does remain at severe and especially in light of recent deadly attacks in Europe it is important we are prepared should the unthinkable happen.

"We will see more armed officers on our streets, but there is no reason to be alarmed. All of our police officers are playing their part and working closely with all of our communities to prevent the possibility of an attack.

"That is why we are returning to real neighbourhood policing with a second dedicated PC in every London ward by the end of next year, to be the eyes and ears of our security services and build trust in our communities.

"Our armed response teams do a very difficult job. They put their own lives at risk every day and are at the front line of protection for Londoners across our city."

Teacher Julie Banks, who was visiting from Liverpool, says she finds the news reassuring, "especially at this time of year when there are more tourists and crowds. We shouldn't be complacent".

Retired friends John Lee and John Coles, both from London, agree. "It's a good thing. It's not going to stop a terror attack, but it makes people feel more secure," Mr Coles says.

"I never thought I would see the day British police carried weapons in the street like this, but I think that needs to happen now - whether we like it or not," Mr Lee adds.

Bricklayer, Gary Johns, 34, approved, but says: "The real question is what their response time is."

Others, however, say the sight of police carrying heavy weapons makes them uneasy. "It makes me more nervous than secure to be honest," says Bryony Wood, a make-up artist, 26, from west London. "It's a reminder of what might happen."

"I have mixed feelings about it," says Ebuka Orunta, 20, from south London. "On one hand I feel safer knowing the Met has a strategy in place to mitigate the risk.

"On the other hand, we've seen the problems with police brutality in the US. It's important the people in charge of this weaponry are the right people who are going to protect us."

If I lived in London myself I think I would be more safe to walk around but not right now. This is interesting to know that UK is doing something about the terrorism in London. I'm more focused on the guns that they're using in that picture. That sniper riffle looks OP.

Seriously? You would rather increase the risk of having your limbs ripped off in an explosion, or your head sliced from your neck by a machete wielding extremist, as opposed to being reminded that these things could possibly happen by seeing armed police officers wandering around?

This quote demonstrates just how detached some people in the first world are from the violence and horrors of most of the rest of the world.

You should be nervous, you're likely an idiot if you're not nervous if you live in a major city at this point.
The point is, would you feel more or less nervous knowing that if someone starts shooting up the shopping center you are in there is an armed police officer nearby who can eliminate that threat to your life?

This is like saying that they shouldn't have speed cameras because it reminds us that people can crash their cars and die.

We don't need a reminder anymore, it happens on a weekly basis, sadly. This is a brilliant operation, support it fully handed, and being honest, I'm not a fan of Sadiq, but I have to give him credit on this.

The threat is there, we're at a heightened counter terrorism state, meaning an attack is likely.

Police carrying firearms shouldn't make you nervous, if you're a law abiding citizen, our public services are one of the best trained in the world, however, the public need to work with them, instead of using nervousness as a reason to space themselves. They are just like you and me.

Everyone is tired of the threat, and just disregarding the hate doesn't make it go away, sometimes these means are necessary.

600 over two years? I support the cause but i really can not see this making a major impact if any impact at all.

Officers will go through extensive training, of up to 2 years, before they're allowed out on patrol with firearms. It'll have a good impact in the feeling of security and it'll boost the falling numbers of firearms officers in London and in the country.

I don't believe the use of more firearms will resolve anything. I also believe there's a hidden agenda behind this.

They're very unlikely to ever be discharged, just used for deterrent when it comes down to it but they're there should they be required in the event of a Terror Attack.
