In a report coming from the Home Office of the UK, it has been revealed that in over 14,000 incidents involving Firearms Police, there were just 7 (Seven) occasions where officers discharged their weapons against a suspect in the past 12 months (March '15 - March '16).

Whilst this may seem extremely low, it is actually an increase on previous years. Over the same period of time, ending March 2015, there were 6 incidents involving the discharge of firearms.

Why is the number so low?

British armed police are only deployed to specific incidents and to guard vulnerable locations like airports and public buildings.

The firearms figures emerged as the Police Federation reiterated its concern over government cuts to the number of armed officers in light of a spate of terror attacks on the continent.

United States Comparison

Police in the United States have killed over 600 people in 2016 alone. The United States of course has a bigger population than the UK Britain has 64.1 million residents, the US 319 million. But on a per-capita basis, Britains rate of police gun use would translate into US police using their guns on 35 occasions in an entire year. This would be an unthinkably low number.

The British Police just think they are like the Americans when they have their guns. But just like in the USA they also shoot African Americans for absolutely no reason.

That statement is as wrong as they come. Think they're like Americans?! Why don't we have a body count of over 600 this year alone then?

If someone gets shot by Police over here, trust me.. there will be a very good reason. 7 times in 14,000+ incidents! There's been incidents long in the past of unlawful shootings but the police must do over 15 reports whenever they discharge their weapon, regardless of why or when.

Unless your purposely trying to start a flame war, or you're actually this pathetically unintelligent, you probably shouldn't post here again with some non-sense like that.

And is there a reason to compare? Just seems like something thrown in to start a flame war.

Besides that, I'm not surprised there aren't that many incidents. Not all cops are armed in the UK like here in the U.S.

I bet that number would be higher if every cop in the UK were armed.

It's on every article about the topic, comparing between here and the US.

There probably would be more but not many more, our Police are better trained in self defence and takedowns, dealing with suspects without the use of even CS Spray etc.. A lot of our Officers use tasers anyway, don't use them that frequently but they're very effective and can take down a suspect at distance.

Interesting facts here, yeah UK Police are not violent like the USA Police where you here stupid reasons why that person got shot for no damn reason. Only time UK Police to draw out a gun if something is very harmful dangerous situations. People are mainly tasered by police over here (UK)

If only I could laugh at you, you must a Hillary Clinton supporter. Ashamed, you should be the US is the greatest country on earth. And, for some idiot like you to bash it you must be autistic.

The US leads the world in two fields. Most military spending and most incarcerated citizens per 100,000.

You've got freedom? So do many other countries. The US is just a country, it's a good one compared to many, but to say that it's the best, or that any country is the best and therefore immune from criticism is, to put it as bluntly as you did - idiotic.

Yeah but the police there don't expect or assume the person they are about to detain has a firearm since it's illegal over there and I bet it's very uncommon and guns are hard to come by, making the two countries have very different types of training standards when it comes to approaching.
