So I like to exercise at night, mainly cycling because much much less cars. But recently I had someone tell me that exercising at night is a terrible idea, not because of the "danger" but because of the way our bodies are and work and react to the night.

This person claimed that in general basically, riding at night or working out in any way will put your body into a "natural" state where in short you wont be able to sleep after a work out. I already have sleeping issues as it is (not because I ride at night ive always had bad sleep) but I was reading online from many different sources that this is bro science (not true).

Have you guys ever heard of anyone saying working out at night is bad? If you think it is bad WHY because the only thing this person was saying is the general "well its unhealthy" and "it messes with your sleep" which ive read is bs.

This question isnt about exercising in a gym, im talking about being out in the world exercising.

I don't see a difference honestly.

I'm a college runner and prefer to run during the day, but sometimes due to the heat I run at night.

I find running before bed better in some cases, ill usually take a shower afterwards. Puts me straight to sleep!

Exercising at night will make absolutely no difference, so long as it doesn't effect the actual amount of hours you're sleeping. For example, it wouldn't be a good idea to go running at 11PM if you're planning on waking up at 6AM because you'll only be getting six or seven hours sleep at most which means you probably wont be able to fully recover. If you can exercise and still get to bed at roughly the same time as you could without exercising at night then there's absolutely no problem.

In terms of your body going into some neutral mode, your friend has no idea what he's talking about. You exercise which in turn breaks your body down (muscles, cells and so on) and then when you're sleeping your body uses the nutrients from the food you've eaten during the day to repair itself. If anything, your body has just used the majority of your stored energy exercising and it will want to sleep in order to make up for it.

I used to run a few miles every day at night, it had no negative effects on me. Personally, I can't see there being a problem with exercise at night.
