The Turkish PM has said a group of the military is involved in an attempted coup, amid reports of jets flying over Ankara.

Turkish prime minister Binali Yildirim has called for calm, saying security forces are doing what is necessary to resolve the situation.

Turkish broadcaster NTV is showing footage of tanks at the entrance to Istanbul's Ataturk airport.

Military vehicles are blocking two bridges in Istanbul, while military jets have been heard flying over the Turkish capital, Ankara.

Some media reports have said ambulances were seen in front of Turkey's military headquarters.

Mr Yildirim has warned that those responsible for this "illegal attempt " will pay the "highest price."

Update 1: The group has reportedly taken hostages including high ranking military officials.

It's an entire military uprising. They're gunning to overthrow the Government to restore 'Democracy and Human Rights'

This is the entire Turkish Military going against the Government. Road Blocks around key locations, Ankara, Istanbul. Tanks outside Istanbul airport. Bridges blocked by the army. F-16's and Helicopters flying above, very low, some opening fire.

The US Military are in 'Force Protection Condition Delta' at their Turkish bases.. The most serious level which can be set, can only be set upon a serious terror threat or incident, all missions must be cancelled and troops must return to the base for protection.

I hope they succeed - so long as they aren't going to be worse than Erdogan.

Erdogan is a horrible leader, propping up ISIS by allowing them to export oil and claiming to be fighting ISIS while bombing the Kurds who are fighting ISIS.
Now we just need Saudi Arabia's military to do the same thing.

Not to mention that Erdogan is as much a threat to freedom of speech as cutting out people's tongues. He's took over a newspaper which was critical of the government, he threatened a man with years in prison for comparing him to Gollum and he even had children arrested for insulting him. The guy is not fit to lead a country.

But the last time that Turkey had a military coup it lasted for 3 years.
This could be a very long process, or it could be over by the end of the week.

Erdogan right now:

Apparently the coup failed and they'll all be tried for treason.
Should have gotten tips from Cersei.
