I don't ever recall saying that english was a usless class? But math is specific to your job. What ever job you have, you might need math, but someone like a bodyguard or a chef will most likely never use those classes.

There's some people that value education as a whole, and then there's those people who do enough "just to get by". People like that are the ones who don't really care about high school, but they fail to realize that if you don't do what's required in high school, you aren't going to be able to progress into the education needed to further your career choice.

I feel like I'm just rambling now.

BonIver wrote Unfortunately, education can't be catered to fit every student.
I agree entirely that if you don't want to be a scientist you shouldn't have to do Chemistry.
As I've gotten older I've realized that the 'but it's general knowledge!' argument doesn't hold up against reality.
You don't need to know Pythagoras' theorem. You just don't. If it comes up in conversation and you don't know it, it's not the end of the world.

The problem is that many children don't know what they want to be. And the fact that people don't know has made it so that this drone-like first 18 years of life are necessary because society doesn't know what else to do with you because even you don't know what you want to do with you.

School is an excuse to teach children how to behave and act like adults while occasionally teaching you something useful along the way.
When I think back to my school days I don't remember information I learned, I remember the routine, being told to put my uniform straight, assemblies where we had to be silent and respect our teachers.

Maybe I just had a bad experience at school, but for me it was tedious and repetitive.

I really gotta agree with this guy, made some pretty great points basically what I could of said

I value education, i value it so much that im arguing over the internet about it. I think that education is great, i just think that it needs to be reformed to suit the students needs.

I get your point, but how would that work? Would there be a complete different school that would just teach the student what he wants to learn? How would you separate each student's needs and wants into one school? If that makes sense?

It makes complete sense. At my school and im sure others, the school gives us a catalog of all the courses that they offer, and we have to choose which classes that we take. They allow us to choose electives, but they force us to take science, math, english(im not saying that we should not have to take english), and history. Instead of having to take advanced math or advanced science, we should be able to replace those classes with classes that will help us in life.

High school is about introducing you to subjects you might want to study in college, a lot of people find out they want to build a career in something they never thought they would before college. Also a lot of classes especially higher math and science courses are about building your problem solving abilities
