ISPs use statistical multiplexing to sell you higher speeds than they can actually deliver at peak times. For instance, if they have 10 Gbps to work with, they can sell 500 people 100 Mbps connections. These people probably won't need all 100 Mbps at once, so it's usually fine. This saves them a lot of money and makes service cheap.

Your speed depends on how much more bandwidth they sell than they actually have the infrastructure for and how much people sharing that infrastructure with you use. Business connections are more expensive and should always have the full advertised speed.

Hi mate,

I work for an ISP and I would say if you want to troubleshoot your speed:

Run at least 3 speed tests over 12 hours, one in the morning one afternoon and one evening then average it

Replace microfilter (the splitter that connects with the phone and router)

Try plugging in router straight to test socket monitor.

Get replacement router from ISP.

These are all the CPE (customer-premises equipment) checks necessary to do to determine whether its a fault in your property or not.

Also go to [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] (works in UK) and check your average area speed, double check your package and be aware that your ISP will try to give you as high as they can UP to that speed not on that speed.

Also bear in mind they will advertise the speed in megabits not megabytes. There are 8 megabits in 1 megabyte so they say you will get up to 100 megabits which in reality is 12.5 megabytes that is the common MB thrown around when talking about downloading speed.

I would say you are getting a decent speed for the package but if you want to double check do everything above and then contact your ISP

Kind Regards,

Mike
