Next-Gen Console Buying Guide

2013 proved to be a big year for the gaming community. There have been countless title releases, but the most notable product(s) to be released and speculated about, are the 8th-generation consoles, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The main focus though, is which console should consumers buy.
I'm going to be giving you a guide. A guide on whether or not you should buy a next-gen console. I am not however, going to be telling you which console to purchase, that is ultimately your decision. Hopefully I can shed some light on the questions any of you may have.

There's plenty of reasons to get either console. They both put out roughly the same type of gameplay (graphic-wise). Sure, there are differences, they're different consoles though right? You have to look at the game selection though. It's not necessarily a matter of which console will have more titles, but rather that of which titles you're most interested in.
If you're interested in playing only Call of Duty, Battlefield, FIFA, etc. Then the console choice really doesn't affect you. Each console has multiplatform games (usually the more popular titles), so you don't have to worry about those being on your system. You do however have to take into effect which exclusives you want the most.

It seems that in today's world, consoles are multiplayer-online based. Correct me if I'm wrong but, wouldn't you like to know what you're able to do online, and what is required to play online?
Both systems offer online service, in fact, it's one of the main selling points.
Xbox One
Xbox Live hasn't changed. A Gold Subscription is still required to play online. It's been this way since the Xbox 360, and most likely isn't going to change anytime soon.

PlayStation 4
This year though, PlayStation has learned a thing or two from Xbox and is now requiring PlayStation Plus (PlayStation's premium online service) to play online games. Certain games will offer exclusive online play without this requirement, but for the majority of games, Sony has decided to implement this into their online servers.

For Playstation 3 users, online was free, that's right free. That was one of the main selling points for it actually. Players could purchase the console and not worry about post-market purchases such as PlayStation Plus. This would be something to consider before buying a PlayStation 4. Payment is required now to play online on the new console.
Controllers:

A key change to the next-gen consoles was a revamp of the controllers. Both previous consoles have been out since 2005 (Xbox 360) and 2006 (Playstation 3). This has given users a very long time to get acquainted to the controllers. Switching it up like this was sure to cause some issues with familiarity for buyers.
Xbox One
The controller isn't as odd as you'd think. It looks different than Xbox 360's controller yes, but it hasn't changed that much. The only notable thing (for me at least) is the removal/replacement of the battery pack for wireless controllers. The battery compartment has been lowered into the controller itself, providing a smooth backing. The only issue I really ran into against the new controller was figuring out where to put my fingers that weren't occupying the joysticks, triggers, or buttons.
PlayStation 4
Sony has changed quite a few features of the PlayStation controller. The new DualShock 4 controller offers many things the Xbox One controller does not. For one, there's a touchpad located dead-center on the face of the controller. This allows users to interact with the game differently than they had before. Also new, are 4 changeable LED light displays allowing an easy recognition of players in-game.

It's looks like a very easy solution. One console is $100 cheaper than the other. It's not that simply though. Here's why.
Xbox One
The list price for the Xbox One is $499.99 which includes the new Kinect 2.0 sensor. Believe me when I tell you, they have drastically improved Kinect's abilities. I wouldn't say it's worth the extra $100 more than the PlayStation 4, but it does offer a certain next-gen feel to the console. I was a skeptic before buying the Xbox One. I really was. I didn't want anything to do with it, I thought it was just a waste a space and money. After buying the Xbox One though, it does serve a few cool features.
I can verbally say "Xbox on" from across the room, house, etc. and the Kinect 2.0 will hear me say/scream it and power on the console. During games such as Battlefield 4, voice commands can be given instead of on the controller. An example would be if I needed a medic. Instead of pressing some buttons on the controller, I could just say aloud, "Need medic", and my character in-game will reciprocate the command.
PlayStation 4
The list price for the PlayStation 4 is $399.99 which is significantly lower than it's competitor. This could create the illusion that one should pay less for the same hardware essentially. They both work about the same as a next-gen console, don't they?
The reason PlayStation 4 is $100 cheaper than Xbox One is because the PlayStation Camera is not included in the standard bundle. The Camera will actually run you an additional $59.99 if you purchase separately.
Personally, I haven't had the opportunity to interact and use the new PlayStation Camera, although I'd imagine it works very similar to Xbox's Kinect 2.0.
All in all, there is a $100 difference between the two consoles, but only a $40 difference between the two with identical components. What's 40 dollars though comparable to the $100's spent on the consoles themselves?

Xbox Live hasn't changed. A Gold Subscription is still required to play online. It's been this way since the Xbox 360, and most likely isn't going to change anytime soon.

This year though, PlayStation has learned a thing or two from Xbox and is now requiring PlayStation Plus (PlayStation's premium online service) to play online games. Certain games will offer exclusive online play without this requirement, but for the majority of games, Sony has decided to implement this into their online servers.

For Playstation 3 users, online was free, that's right free. That was one of the main selling points for it actually. Players could purchase the console and not worry about post-market purchases such as PlayStation Plus. This would be something to consider before buying a PlayStation 4. Payment is required now to play online on the new console.

A key change to the next-gen consoles was a revamp of the controllers. Both previous consoles have been out since 2005 (Xbox 360) and 2006 (Playstation 3). This has given users a very long time to get acquainted to the controllers. Switching it up like this was sure to cause some issues with familiarity for buyers.
Xbox One
The controller isn't as odd as you'd think. It looks different than Xbox 360's controller yes, but it hasn't changed that much. The only notable thing (for me at least) is the removal/replacement of the battery pack for wireless controllers. The battery compartment has been lowered into the controller itself, providing a smooth backing. The only issue I really ran into against the new controller was figuring out where to put my fingers that weren't occupying the joysticks, triggers, or buttons.
PlayStation 4
Sony has changed quite a few features of the PlayStation controller. The new DualShock 4 controller offers many things the Xbox One controller does not. For one, there's a touchpad located dead-center on the face of the controller. This allows users to interact with the game differently than they had before. Also new, are 4 changeable LED light displays allowing an easy recognition of players in-game.

It's looks like a very easy solution. One console is $100 cheaper than the other. It's not that simply though. Here's why.
Xbox One
The list price for the Xbox One is $499.99 which includes the new Kinect 2.0 sensor. Believe me when I tell you, they have drastically improved Kinect's abilities. I wouldn't say it's worth the extra $100 more than the PlayStation 4, but it does offer a certain next-gen feel to the console. I was a skeptic before buying the Xbox One. I really was. I didn't want anything to do with it, I thought it was just a waste a space and money. After buying the Xbox One though, it does serve a few cool features.
I can verbally say "Xbox on" from across the room, house, etc. and the Kinect 2.0 will hear me say/scream it and power on the console. During games such as Battlefield 4, voice commands can be given instead of on the controller. An example would be if I needed a medic. Instead of pressing some buttons on the controller, I could just say aloud, "Need medic", and my character in-game will reciprocate the command.
PlayStation 4
The list price for the PlayStation 4 is $399.99 which is significantly lower than it's competitor. This could create the illusion that one should pay less for the same hardware essentially. They both work about the same as a next-gen console, don't they?
The reason PlayStation 4 is $100 cheaper than Xbox One is because the PlayStation Camera is not included in the standard bundle. The Camera will actually run you an additional $59.99 if you purchase separately.
Personally, I haven't had the opportunity to interact and use the new PlayStation Camera, although I'd imagine it works very similar to Xbox's Kinect 2.0.
All in all, there is a $100 difference between the two consoles, but only a $40 difference between the two with identical components. What's 40 dollars though comparable to the $100's spent on the consoles themselves?

Keep in mind, each console is expected to have 100+ games released on each one over the coming years. But that's just it though, how many years will Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 be supported?

From multiple sources online, Xbox 360 is expected to be supported for another 2-3 years, basically, up until 2016. If you'd like to read, here's a few sources quoting Microsoft:

Sony appears to have a different outtake on supporting their older consoles. They believe that their are consumers, for various reasons, are late in the cycle. This could be from many reasons, (i.e. waiting for price drops). When the PlayStation 3 was released, PS2 was supported for an additional 5 (five) years, totaling an 11-year lifespan. They haven't said whether or not the PlayStation 3 will last as long as the PS2 did, but they aren't pulling the plug relatively soon. Ultimately, I can't make this decision for you. As you can see and read above, there are plenty of similarities and differences between the two consoles. Each has their strong points, and each has their weak points.

I like how they extend support for the older consoles by a few years, i know its run on older hardware, but at least they still show they care about the older consoles and are still pleasing their customers.
Have to give both company props, despite some negative feedback about them, they have a great title/console support.
