I don't have a desktop, unfortunately, but I get the portability I need for college.

CPU - Intel i7 4700HQ 4th Generation @ 2.4GHz.
GPU - Nvidia GeForce GTX 770m 3GB DDR5.
RAM - 4 x 4 GB 1600 MHz = 16GB DDR3.
HDD - 1 TB + 256 GB SSD
OS - Windows 8 (64-Bit[I hate it and I am changing it soon])

Definitely put an SSD in that, then use an external hard drive for games etc.

There is a 256 GB SSD in there, I boot up in 4.3 seconds, it's ridiculously fast.
It has Thunderbolt support so I can't wait to utilize that.
