As r00t said, it's very likely that you will need to replace that PSU. PSUs are more important than people think, if your PSU craps out it's likely that it will take some parts with it.

I don't know what you mean by "custom PSU," but all custom builds will have a power supply you bought separately. If you buy the wrong one, it's risky, but if you buy the right one, it's not. There's nothing risky about a custom build.
