I have a Toshiba A665 - S5170 Laptop. I have never had any problems with it until tonight. I was browsing and BAM all of a sudden a gray screen popped up and stayed for a couple of seconds then my laptop instantly turned off. I turned it back on and popped up a black screen, but I could still use my cursor on the mouse. I kept this on for about 20 minutes and the screen was still black. I have tried unplugging everything including the battery and holding down the power up button for 30 seconds then re attaching the battery and yet there was still a black screen with only my cursor.

Can anyone help me with this problem? Is the HDD broken? Overheated? HELP PLEASE!

500 Rep to anyone who can find the problem and make my laptop working again

I Had the same problem, i think its your HDD Mine did the exact same thing and my HDD is broken.

Try buying a new HDD that should solve the problem.

Edit: I Also have the same pc, i tryed taking battrey out and the 30 second power button.

None off that works, Tbh toshiba sucks. Your best off buying a whole new laptop.

Your HDD is probably broken. Try backing it up using a HDD caddy on a different computer and then buying a new one. Transfer all the data onto the new one and then place it back in the laptop. It could also be the screen though. I suggest buying a new laptop if the screens broken on you!

It could be your hard drive, it sounds like it.

If you could you can open the bottom area of the laptop and take out the HDD and re attach it. If that does not work then your HDD may have gone corrupt.

I had the EXACT thing happen to me on a computer similar to yours and it was the graphics card. It took a poop on me, I had to buy a new Laptop.
But it could possibly be the HDD.

Try booting from the Windows disc and repair the OS, i only suggest that because my uncle had this problem, he bought a new HDD and that wasn't it.

Try resetting it to factory settings.

But it could be a number of things, maybe the OS, motherboard, HDD or maybe just a virus.

Hope this helps in some way, hope you get it sorted!

I have the same exact computer as you and I had the same problem, I had to end up resetting my computer to factory default and now it works perfect

Steps to resetting it to factory default.

1. Shut down your computer.

2. Turn the PC back on and repeatedly hit the F8 key until the Adavance Boot Option Scree Appears.

3. Click "Repair your Computer" if you are not already on it and then press enter.

4. Choose yout country and then click ok.

5. On the "System Recovery Options Screen" click "Restore Application" which is the last option.

6. Follow the on screen instructions.

7. When prompted, click on "Full System Recovery",

8. Then click "Next".

9. Then click "Yes".

10. You will notice for a while it seems like nothing is happening, but give it some time.

11. After some minutes, maybe even hours recovery will complete and then click "Finish".

And then your computer will be practically brand new.

Hope this helps

Seems as if this is an HDD failure of some sort.

I have given each user who answered 100 rep. Thanks for the help.
