Well to start off I'm completly new to Paintball. My dad has been to comps. and big events but they were years ago(before I was born). I know just about everything to do with airsoft though. My friends are getting into airsoft and I just want to know some reliable brands, average cost of maintaining, and anything else I should know. Thanks for the help.

Well if your buying all your stuff, and not using rentals at the paintball place your usually going to be playing at. [rental stuff is gross and terrible anywhere your go...]
but anyways if your going to buy your stuff i would go for a cheaper gun instead of a Dye like i am.
i would recommend a Spyder, or something from Azodin like the Azodin Kaos-D the picture is the Azodin kaos-D [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

The Azodin Kaos-D paintball gun has the latest blowback technology and makes this one of the smoothest and most accurate paintball guns on the market.

The ZeRO system is installed on the Azodin Kaos-D which stands for Zero Recoil Operation. This takes away most of the kick of the gun and reduces the recoil signature. Now with the Azodin Kaos-D, you can spend more time aiming and less time controlling the marker.

The Azodin Kaos-D Paintball Gun is currently available in Orange Flame and Black Caramel.

At around $180 USD

Features
ZeRO System
Feather Striker System
Twist Lock II Feedneck
14 Inch One Piece Barrel
Low Pressure Inline Regulator
Azodin Kaos-D On/Off ASA
Compatible with CO2 or HPA

i'm pretty sure this is the 2011 model or the 2012 i forgot D: sowwy. but these are usually some of the cheaper guns. [paintball is expensive btw]

Weight: 1048 g / 2.31 lb / 37. oz
Length: 528 mm / 20.79 in
Height: 240 mm / 9.45 in
Width: 35 mm / 1.38 in
Barrel Thread: Interchangeable With Autococker Thread Barrels
Feedneck Thread: Interchangeable With Ion / Impulse Thread Feedneck
Low Pressure Inline Regulator: Standard ASA Thread
On/Off Bottom ASA: Interchangeable With Rail or Dovetail Mount

you might also want to get a really good hopper like this one. It is expensive tho, but you can always find a less expensive hopper [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Dye Blows the competition away with the new Dye Rotor Paintball Loader.
Dye Rotor Features
50+ bps (balls per second).
REVOLUTIONARY PATENTED ROTOR TECHNOLOGY - The ROTOR LOADER far exceeds pro level feed requirements with an impressive 50+ balls per second feed rate. The constant feed rotor carousel combined with the opposing rotation of the center rotor arm provides smooth, consistent, rapid and dependable feed performance shot after shot. This new technological design provides unmatched performance over any other loader on the market.
LOW PROFILE - Designed with the professional player in mind, the unique center feed design of the Rotor pushes balls straight down over a short distance allowing the loader size and shape to be small and low profile.
200 BALL CAPACITY - Play longer without reloading. The ROTOR holds up to 20% more paint than most loaders, while having the lowest profile. Additionally, the ROTOR is also the lightest 200 round loader available. Simply smaller, lighter and faster.
SPRING LOADED FLOOR TRAY - The Patent Pending revolutionary collapsing floor tray allows for maximum ball capacity, while ensuring consistent, reliable feeding down to the last ball. The spring floor tray also ensures ball feeding while shooting at elevated targets by raising the floor as you shoot.
NO TOOLS NEEDED - The ROTOR can be effortlessly broken down for basic cleaning or maintenance with the push of a button. No tiny screws and nuts to loosen, parts to lose or break off. Just smart and simple engineering with the players needs in mind.
SEE THROUGH WINDOW - Provides you the ability to monitor your paint level visually so you don't get caught without paint. Windows available in additional colors.
INTERCHANGEABLE CARRIER WITH SPRING LID - The transparent locking lid is integrated into an interchangeable dual density carrier. The spring tension lid allows fast loading and a secure lock on the loader. The carrier design allows you to quickly change between your lid or speed feed. Additionally the removable upper shell allows you to use a high capacity upper that will hold 250 rounds
POSITIVE PUSH POWER BUTTON - Single push Power On/Off button with LED display. The positive push button and bright LED informs you when your loader is on or off.
JAM RELEASE TRIGGER - In the rare event of a ball jam caused by oversized or out of round paint, simply give the jam release trigger a quick pull and you are back in action.
SHOT COUNT - The ROTOR provides an impressive 50,000+ ball shot count on one set of three AA batteries. This new design of efficient power regulation is revolutionary and the first of its kind in loader technology. AT around $190 USD but you can always find a cheaper one like this [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Features

High 190+ ball capacity
Jam free operation
Variable feed rate: 9+ balls per second
LED operation indicator
Easy view lid
Durable composite construction
Uses one 9v battery
3 speed operation: recreational, fast feed, and competition
Once turned on, does not stop spinning until turned off

AT around $35 USD it is good for the new comers of paintball

For an Air tank i would advice Compressed Air
and like this 48/3000 Compressed Air Tank
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Features:

Standard: High Pressure
Light, compact and will give you up to 650 shots with a full fill
Industry standard output pressure 800psi.
Consistent high Flow Technology piston
Mil-spec Belleville springs
Dual safety rupture plugs for both bottle and marker safety
High quality 6000 PSI mini gauge
Durable nickel plated navel brass bonnet
Stainless Steel high pressure fill nipple
Dual locking set screws
DOT and TC Certified "Made in USA Aluminum Cylinder"
5 year hydro test date

At around $40 USD

so thats $180 USD the gun, $40 USD for the air tank, $190 USD for the really awesome hopper, or $35 USD for the new comer hopper,

you can buy any mask really doesn't matter just anything that will be comfortable to you, you can check masks out your self because that has to do with your head and i don't know your head.. this toke me forever to type c(: so be happy with it! jk, if you want some lower costing stuff that is still Good PM me and ill help you..

You might also want to add:
Never put your finger in the feed neck ever! Whether the gun is gassed or not, this could result in loss of a finger or just a broken finger.
I was messing around with my friends and put my finger in the feedneck just to be funny, and i tapped the trigger and almost broke my finger. It hurt like sh*t.
But anyway, awesome guide. You should put a gun rating, and maybe some gear recommendations(what gear to get for price range and skill level, plus style of play[x-ball or woodsball]). Anyway awesome guide, hope to see this thread grow tremendously.
