Introduction

In this guide I will be showing you the basics of a Minecraft Servers as well as the features of different hosts. I will go through the differences between a VPS and Shared Hosting. By the end my goal is to better educate the members of TTG. Without further ado here we go!

VPS vs Shared Hosting

VPS stans for Virtual Private Server. You will have your own personal server. No one else will be on the same network as you. There will be interference with other server and it will run much smoother. Shared Hosting does require the annoying ports and the end of the IP. (ex. 474.4720.47:25563) A VPS are sometimes more expansive but not always. With a VPS you also have access to FTP and SSH. [I use Filezilla(FTP) and Putty(SSH)] FTP and SSH are the closest thing you can get to have your server folder on your desktop without hosting your server at home. You can drag and drop files into it. Im my opinion its a lot better that a control pannel. With FTP and MCMA (McMyAdmin) your server is ready to go! shared Hosting is a good option for someone who is new to having there own server. It can be very overwhelming at first. With Shared you often get a user friendly control panel. (ex MultiCraft) It makes plugins easy to install as well as easy access to the console etc. Overall I would say that if you are looking to have a larger server and have good experiences with servers then definitely go with a VPS. If you are newer and looking to have a small server with a few friend shared is for you.

Choosing The Right RAM Amount

When choosing a server this is by far the most important thing you will decide. Most people often say get the most you can. I say get the amount you will need. There is no reason to get 3GB of RAM and have 5 players on your server. I also would never go with any RAM amount less than 700mb. Mojang says that it is recommended that you have at least 1GB of RAM for your server. Choosing RAM is totally up to you but all I will say is to get the amount that your server will use, not what your server wants. You can always upgrade as your server increases on size.

Server Hosts

Keep in mind that cheap does not mean best.

I have used a few hosts and will say that no host is perfect.

The following are the best in my opinion. (yes I do work for MCLayer 8) )

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] (PM for a 50% for life time code)

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] (Solid hoster, shared hosting)

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] (Great support, all VPS, ask me for discounts)

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] (Great all around host)

The last two are ones that are cheap but I would stay away from.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] (Offer no support what so ever, although it says they do)

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] (Support members were rude and not helpful)

Using Bukkit On Your Server

Bukkit is a server mod that allows you to install plugins to enhance your server and make it more user friendly. Keep in mind bukkit + plugins does mean a lot more RAM usage, make sure you out this into your RAM amount consideration. Below I will recommend a few plugins that I use in my servers.

PermissionsEx - (PEX) is a new permissions plugin, based on Permissions ideas and supports all of its features. But PEX is more! It offers different backends, powerful ingame management, fine grained restrictions for world modification.

Essentials - Essentials offers about 100 commands useful on just about every server, from kits to mob spawning.

MCBans - Complete Kick/Ban/Global Ban System

I could go on and on about plugins so if you need and help feel free to PM me with any questions.

I hope I was able to help you increase your knowledge about anything you were confused about. As always feel free the comment below and PM me with feedback or questions. Please note, I am a human and do make mistake so please tell me if I left something out or wrote something incorrectly!
