So I currently do not have a car, and my girlfriend recently got a new SUV because her old car was garbage. It's like a 2005 Dodge Neon Base Model, has donuts all the way around, loses a quart of oil every three days, takes 15 minutes to warm up for heat to work, has a terrible wobble and it's very bumpy. I'm into cars, and I know a bit about them but I'm not an expert by any means.
Should I take her old car and fix what I can and drive it? I work at AutoZone so I get a 20% discount on parts.
Long story short, should I spend the money to fix it and make it drivable, then save for a newer car, or should I just wait and save up for a new car.
My work isnt walking distance or bike distance (about a 25 minute drive).
All advice is greatly appreciated

I personally wouldn't. If you are losing that much oil, you definitely have a severe oil leak. Then you may have front end suspension issues like; control arms, the rod ends, ball joints, the rack and pinion my be leaking, I'm sure most of the bushings are probably dry rotting. Obviously these are just assumptions, its hard to tell you unless I get the car on a lift and look it over. Just out of curiosity how many miles does it have?

There is a huge difference between losing oil and burning oil. A fitting might not be tight, or a cheap little hose might be broken. Or it could be burning oil and about to blow up. If I were you I would not worry about the cosmetics, look on Craigslist for tires (you can get a set of decent tread matching tires on wheels for South of $100), and take it to a mechanic to see what they say. The mechanic obviously should be your first stop, but pay then the $100 to do a vehicle check and they will give you a list of stuff wrong with the car along with the price to fix said items, then you ask how in need are these parts. Some stuff might have another ~10k miles left on them others might have 2 miles left. From there see if you can fix it and see what it will cost you then get on Craigslist and see what other cars you can get for the price of fixing this car. The difference being that the other car probably will have its own issues.

FYI, 15 mins to warm up is pretty much standard if you have the vehicle just idling. Idling doesn't produce much heat and on top of it the temp you see in your vehicle is the coolant temp, so you have to wait for the actual fluids to heat up. Even in my '06 F-250 it takes roughly 10 minutes of actual driving (I never idle the truck) before it reaches its operating temp of 185-200*. I can start to use the heat around 130-140* though.

I don't think I'd take it, but if you're desperate go for it!

That much oil is horrible to lose and neons were never the greatest, im a dodge mechanic so I know from experience, so personally I wouldn't do that.
