Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's son and son-in-law denied allegations Thursday that they belonged to a drug trafficking gang, with the explosive claims raising questions about the government's bloody anti-narcotics crackdown.

Duterte came to power last year promising to wage a brutal and unprecedented war on drugs. Since then, police have killed around 3,800 suspects in anti-narcotics operations, while thousands of other people have been murdered in unexplained circumstances.

His son Paolo Duterte and son-in-law Manases Carpio appeared at a Senate inquiry Thursday to answer accusations that they helped facilitate the shipment of crystal methamphetamine worth 6.4 billion pesos ($125.4 million) into the Philippines from China in exchange for payment.

The allegations emerged last month when a customs broker told the Senate panel that he had heard the names of Duterte's son and son-in-law mentioned while seeking to expedite the shipment.
The broker later issued a statement clearing the two men of involvement.

But opposition senator Antonio Trillanes at the inquiry accused Duterte's son of belonging to a drug trafficking gang, saying the 42-year-old had a tattoo on his back, resembling a dragon, that was "proof... of his membership" in the gang.
Paolo Duterte, vice-mayor of the southern city of Davao, told the panel that he had a tattoo but said he could not answer allegations based on hearsay.

"The law of karma will operate especially to those with evil intent," he added in a apparent swipe at Trillanes, an arch-critic of the president.
Carpio, who is married to Davao city mayor Sara Duterte, also rejected allegations against their family.

"Me and my brother-in-law have been publicly crucified based on rumours and gossip," said Carpio, a lawyer.
"I have no knowledge of or involvement in the illegal drugs shipment."

The sensational allegations have captured the attention of Filipinos, many of whom back the president's vow to pursue an unrelenting war against drug traffickers.
Duterte, 72, has said he would be "happy to slaughter" three million Filipino drug addicts, even as critics warn the deaths of thousands of people killed in the crackdown may amount to a crime against humanity.

Duterte has denied ever inciting police or vigilantes to commit mass murder.

In speeches, he had encouraged his son to attend the hearing but advised him to invoke his "right of silence".
Detained opposition senator Leila De Lima last month accused the president of hypocrisy over his son's case.

This is brilliant. For Duterte it shouldn't even matter whether he is guilty or innocent.
The vigilantes going around killing people for drug offences at the behest of Duterte and with his blessing are killing people who are either known to be using or selling drugs and people who are only suspected of it.

Duterte's son should be a target for the very vigilantes he is backing. Will he recognize this? Of course not, he's a moron.
I don't even believe in karma, but it would be the clearest display of karma and irony in the history of this planet if his son was assassinated because of this.

I feel like this right here may be the turning point that actually divides the Filipino people against Duterte. The exact quote below makes it seem like he would take his son's side in this.
In speeches, he had encouraged his son to attend the hearing but advised him to invoke his "right of silence."
Now Duterte has to choose a side. Stick by his word of cracking down on drug dealers and let his son be thrown and/or killed/executed or side with his son and show the people who have been following him blindly that his family is exempt from this law. If Duterte sides with his son, gets him off the hook and then his son ends up assassinated - which, I assume would be by a vengeful person who lost a family member to the killings - I would not put it past Duterte to enact some new law, targeting a new group of people, in spite of his son's death.

I say this is the turning point of dividing people up against Duterte because his decision rests on it. He sides with his son, the people who have been killing now see that the family of Duterte are free to do what seems to have been labeled the most evil and taboo thing to do in the country, which is drug use, selling or suspected of either/or. Some would even question why they killed a certain person, even if they ended up killing a friend or family or at the very least informed someone about the suspicion and got said person killed. On the other hand, if he decides to let his son go through with what Duterte promised, and his son is in jail or killed for what he did, then the people who were kind of in the middle between of the killings, could very well start to see that if he is willing to let his own son die or kill his own son, then what is stopping him from going further with killings.

All in all, I guess we'll see what happens with his son.

Not a chance. He's extremely popular over there for some reason and that didn't change when the world found out that he is personally taking fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is up to 100 times stronger than heroin.

Update: Looks like Duterte is going to stay on his own law's side and if his son is found guilty, have no problem with his son being murdered/killed.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte says he will not hesitate to have his own son murdered if allegations of his involvement in a $125-million drug shipment prove to be true. He has also vowed to "protect the police who kill him."

"I said before my order was: 'If I have children who are into drugs, kill them so people will not have anything to say,'" Duterte said in a speech on Wednesday night, as quoted by AFP.

"So I told Pulong [son's nickname]: 'My order is to kill you if you are caught. And I will protect the police who kill you, if it is true.'"

Sounds to me like he's found a way to make sure his son is found innocent regardless of what the truth is.
An impartial and uninfluenced justice system doesn't seem like it could be a reality with a man like that, with the amount of power he has, involved.

Let's see what happens though.
If he does end up facilitating the murder of his own son then at least he's a man of his word, even if his word is insane.
