Martin Scorsese and Hangover director working on stand-alone Joker origins movie
And no, it wont star Jared Leto

The DC Extended Universe keeps expanding, and Martin Scorsese is reportedly looking to get involved.

A new report from Deadline indicates that Scorsese is working with director Todd Phillips (The Hangover) to produce a stand-alone Joker movie that will examine the villains origin story. Deadline is reporting that the movie will take place in an early 80s Gotham and take on the tone of a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film. This version of Gotham will apparently resemble the gritty New York City of Scorseses early work (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull), and be less similar to the fictional city found in DCs Batman comics.

The most interesting aspect of the report is how this will relate to the DCEU at large. According to Deadline, this will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters. That means DC and Warner Bros. could create new Superman or Batman movies without the current actors playing those roles. If Ben Affleck were to stop playing Batman, this new branch of films could be a good way to introduce a new actor to portray the Caped Crusader.

Deadline is reporting that Jared Leto wouldnt be involved in this Joker movie, as Warner Bros. would look for a younger actor to play the iconic villain. Leto will return for the Suicide Squad sequel, and will also play the Joker in the stand-alone Harley Quinn spinoff.

There is no estimated release date for the film just yet. Phillips is reportedly already working on the script, and it is in the earliest stages of development. Polygon has reached out to Warner Bros. and will update if more information becomes available.

I'm curious at how they're going to portray an origin around the Joker.

In the Arkham Origins game, they kind of did a poor example of Joker's origin (and a few other villains for that matter.) They basically just threw him in as a crime lord, who pretended to be Black Mask, put a bounty on Batman and then became what he is now. I will give them slight credit for a little back story getting closer to the end of the game with a different look at Joker that ties into the comic where people think Joker came from (not sure how the comic universe works since there is so many incarnations.) In that little back story, it has Joker trying to do stand-up comedy where he is actually Joker however, later on it now shows him as just a person in a suit with a red hood and cape; which is the same depiction of the person who fell/was thrown into a vat of chemicals in the original Batman comics. With that said, that back story was better suited as an origin story for Harley Quinn as it shows how Joker was able to manipulate her into falling for him.

Then over onto Batman: The Telltale Series game. It really seems iffy about how Joker is going to be. I haven't finished the first one at all, but got to Episode 4 out of 5. Joker is known as John Doe, and is still mentally unhinged and locked in Arkham Asylum. He still retains his cunning manipulation, and rather quick reflexes and great close combat skills, as it was shown with a fight scene that involved a knife. Just now he isn't the Joker yet, despite having pale skin and green hair; however, he did mention that Bruce Waine does owe him a favour if John breaks Bruce out of Arkham Asylum. As to what that is, I don't know yet as I haven't reached episode 5 or even started Season 2, but it's leading up to the fact that Joker knows or will know who Batman is.

I really never watched any cartoons of the superhero universe and never really read comics. Gotham was a show I was going to watch but never got to, so I don't know if they touched a Joker origin there or not. So I am curious on how it'll play out, since the 2 that have a Joker origin that I've played, never really went into true detail and since there is different comic universes, I don't know which to be true or not. The only thing I've seen in a comic that "hints" to who Joker is, is a panel where Batman gets into some godlike AI machine with all knowledge and Batman alone is shocked and seems to be in denial of Jokers identity when he asks about Joker's identity, but it was never mentioned who he is (as far as I know.)

I love the idea of a standalone Joker movie, but I hate the idea of an origin story. Jeremy Jahns did a video about this on his channel and he made the point that the best villains don't need origin stories. Hannibal Lecter, creepy as hell in The Silence of the Lambs because we didn't know why he liked to eat people, or what drove him, then he got an origin story movie and he's almost just another bland villain now. The same thing with Norman Bates from Psycho, we don't know why he is the way he is, and we don't need to know, it's better that we don't know because that ups the creep factor.

I think it's the same with the Joker. I like how in The Killing Joke he says towards the end, "If I have to have a past then I prefer it to be multiple choice."
But I can't see them doing that here. Spending millions making a movie, paying a big actor to come and portray him, getting cinemas filled with people eager to see the Joker's origins who aren't comic buffs and then them basically saying, "This is how it happened... or is it?!"

Give us a standalone Joker movie set while Batman is around and making a name for himself but before the Joker ends up on Batman's radar.
I don't think this will be a very good movie, depending on how much involvement Scorsese has, but it could be brilliant if they...

This is pretty much the premise of Arkham Origins. Arkham Origins was a great game, they tried to focus on the origins of a lot of villains, be that through in game scenes, dialog or lore you uncover. Joker was definitely one of the weaker origins, but it still played great. I think the problem I had with the game was because it implied so heavily about origins in general, I was expecting some huge origin about the Joker that would reveal his whole life.

Touching back onto the premise of Arkham Origins, Joker was absent up until around the last 30% of the game, maybe closer to the last quarter of the game, with around maybe 35-ish% there being a hint at another mastermind in the mix - just unknown who it is. The game starts very early in Batman's role. Police and Jim Gordon are against you. Deathstroke is barely finding out about Batman's skills and wanting to test his mantle. Penguin's eye is fine (in all the Arkham games except Origins, Penguin has the end of a glass bottle stuck where his eye is at, as his magnifying glass. Removing it apparently would sever his eye or brain; either way killing him if removed.) It is talked more about Bane's use and reliance of Venom. Riddler just comes up out of nowhere as your stereotypical looking nerd / IT guy. All that you know going into the game is that Black Mask put a bounty on Batman's head and that multiple villains are trying to kill Batman, while destroying Gotham. Joker comes into the play much later on after looking into an attempted murder on Black Mask, then when inside a bank, Joker reveals that he was the true mastermind behind it all while Batman was off doing his own thing even before Origins. It was done great and really touched point on a lot of characters, not just limited to villains.

I do agree that great villains don't need an origin story. The mystery behind them is what keeps things fresh and keeps interest in them. If they reveal Joker's whole life and who he was, then he slowly will just become a psychotic criminal who is actually intelligent, but there is no mystery behind him anymore. There's no changing that an origin story is going to be made, which I'm looking forward to seeing how it's done. Given the small teases and small bits of an origin in the past, I'm curious as to how a movie dedicated to the Joker will play out. In the end, it's really just one irradiation of Joker. As far as I have seen, there are different universe within Batman, such as the Dark Night universe is different from the Arkham universe (Move and games as an example as I don't know about the different universes in any animated shows.) Even though I know an origin story that truly reveals Joker would ruin that mystery behind him, I don't know how long they would be able to keep up with poor explaining or just teasing Joker; as the two games I mentioned before, seems to focus on an origin story for characters, yet seems kind of botched on Joker, when you were jumping in kind of prepared for a full origin story.

Excited for a joker origins movie, if they execute it well it could be a very excellent film. I hope they get it right I was a fan of suicide squad but a lot of people weren't just hope the development of characters for when it comes out is great.

Its really fortunate Jared Leto wont play him. Never liked him as Mr J, dont know who they could cast though. I like how its based around 80s Gotham but im also annoyed how they made Ben Afflecks Batman so old. I like Flashpoint as a Flash fan but would have liked to see a Batman movie with Robin/Nightwing being introduced and Bats vs Joker. I like the idea of a Nightwing solo movie though. Just hope that the Joker movie will have a good majority of Batman villains too like The Riddler, Scarecrow. I dont think its smart to make a villain solo movie unless its a big villain like Venom or Carnage from Marvel.

I agree, Leto was nice though, looking forward to seeing him in sucied squad 2.
Back on topic I'm interested in what direction they well take this movie in. All hero/ villain movies coming out lately have been hit or miss with me being either really good or not very likeable imo
