Hey all.

I'm going to help my friend build his first PC and looking for a recommendations.

Thanks in advance

Budget & Currency: £750 GBP

Peripherals & Monitor: N/A

Games: PUBG, Minecraft, Dota 2, Rainbow Six Siege, GTA V, Warframe etc.

Software: N/A

Aesthetics: Black colour scheme

Rebates/Promos: N/A

Details: This will primarily be a gaming system and to casually browse the internet. He may edit the odd video, but he doesn't have plans to stream in the near future. He did however say that might change, he isn't exactly 100% sure.

When: Within the next 15-30 days I'll be helping him build it.

A little over budget, you can switch to 8GB RAM if you want to save some money;

Also you can swap the 250GB SSD for a 120/128GB SSD and 1TB HDD if you need.

You should be able to order the Gigabyte RX 580 from morecomputers in a couple of days, or this 8GB Sapphire 580 should be available on the 13th;

Otherwise, grab a used GTX 980 for £200-220, or a GTX 970 for £150-180.

Looks good, thanks for the reply.

He'll definitely need to swap out the SSD, and get a 120/128 GB + 1TB HDD as he won't be upgrading for a while.

Also, failing that he can pick up an RX-580 in time, a refurbished/second hand 980 sounds good. However, do you think it's worth getting a 550W PSU to accommodate the GPU? I'm not 100% sure that 450W would be enough to power a 980. Not completely sure though.

EDIT:

Failing that my friend doesn't want a second hand component, nor can he get a 580 in time, what do you think of a 1060 6GB for £250?

EDIT 2:

Also, what do you think of i5's in the current market state? Is it worth picking one up as they are more powerful per core, meaning better frame rate in game? Once again I'm not 100% sure, I'm just brainstorming here.

450w is plenty for a GTX 980. The RX 580 draws more power than the GTX 980 anyway, and 450W is still plenty for the 580.

6GB 1060 is probably the poorer option of the bunch IMO since you can get GTX 970s and 980s at much better prices in comparison but yeah, a 1060 would be fine.

Don't get an i5. Intel isn't worth investing at this point. R5 1400 will perform pretty much on par with a locked i5 in games anyway. Overclock the R5 1400 and you should be out-performing an i5-6500 for the most part. Plus the 1400 has the extra threads which could be beneficial in other tasks.
