President Trump signed legislation on wednesday imposing sanctions on Russia and limiting his own authority to lift them, a measure that has already escalates tension with the Russian government and produced retaliation against the American embassy there.

The White House announced last Friday that Mr. Trump would sign the bill, which passed both houses with near-unanimous, bipartisan majorities that would easily override any veto.

Without even waiting for him to act, Russia seized two United States diplomatic properties and ordered the American embassy and consulates to reduce its overall staff by 755 people, which will mostly be Russian nationals employed by the United States.

This is interesting because Donald Trump has limited his own authority to lift these sanctions. As the TTG member Cohle had said, seems like Donald Trump IS tired of being called Russia's pet and all the other little names the democrats and the world have called him, so he made quite sure that these sanctions would stay firm to show that he does have a strong opposition against Russia and isn't their weak lap dog.

Here is some more information on the matter.

In signing the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, Mr Trump attached a statement calling the sanctions "deeply flawed".

He accused Congress, which last week overwhelmingly passed the measure and sent it to the White House, of overstepping its constitutional authority.

"Yet despite its problems, I am signing this bill for the sake of national unity," Mr Trump's statement says, adding that "it represents the will of the American people to see Russia take steps to improve relations with the United States".

"I built a truly great company worth many billions of dollars. That is a big part of the reason I was elected," he continued.

"As president, I can make far better deals with foreign countries than Congress," he said, adding that they "could not even negotiate a healthcare bill after seven years of talking".

Adding onto the last part you mention about what Cohle said yesterday; Trump apparently has stated that the sanctions law is flawed, which makes it seem like there was some sort of looming pressure on him. No, I don't mean some conspiracy theory where if he didn't sign it, his family goes missing, just the pressure of "am I kissing Putin's ass or am I putting a distance between us."

BJP just added that himself to the post as well. It does seem, after reading what he said, that he was pressured by his own thoughts on what to do with how he was viewed on the Russia topic and decided on putting a distance between them. I honestly don't see why Trump has such a large interest in becoming Russia's "friend" so strongly when his whole campaign motto was that "America comes first" and I have yet to understand why he has such a strong position in favor of having Russia as a strong ally.
