Microsofts next Windows 10 update, called the Autumn (or Fall in the US) Creators Update, will bring a variety of new features. But one long-standing stalwart of the Windows experience has been put on the chopping block: Microsoft Paint.

The forthcoming Fall Creators Update for Windows 10 will do a great many things, including asking you to review your privacy settings every 15 minutes until it comes out later this year. As part of the update, Microsoft will be rolling some functions into different ones, and wholly eliminating others. Some moves are expected, like moving the Reading List into Edge. The company is also removing the last fossilized remains of Outlook Express. But other changes are perhaps less obvious: to wit, Microsoft is deprecating Paint in the Fall Creators Update, and may remove it entirely.

In light of Microsofts shift to Paint 3D, it makes sense to deprecate regular old Paint. But Paint is the last shining scion of pixel art, and its legacy will live on in crappy bitmaps forever. We've had Paint for 32 years, starting from the monochrome version that shipped with Windows 1.0 in 1985. It may stay around for a while yet, especially if theres broad user protest at its departure. Whether this is a case of farewell, we hardly knew ye or get rekt scrub is a matter of personal opinion and use case. But if Paint does get iced, and you need a new lightweight program to manipulate images, you may wish to check out the excellent and free-as-in-beer Paint.net

With the Windows 10 Creators Update, released in April, Microsoft introduced the new Paint 3D, which is installed alongside traditional Paint and features 3D image making tools as well as some basic 2D image editing. But it is not an update to original Paint and doesnt behave like it, in my opinion nothing will ever behave/live up to paint...

UPDATE: Microsoft will be keeping MS Paint available for free on the Windows store!

"Today, we've seen an incredible outpouring of support and nostalgia around MS Paint. If there's anything we learned, it's that after 32 years, MS Paint has a lot of fans. It's been amazing to see so much love for our trusty old app.

"Amidst today's commentary around MS Paint we wanted to take this opportunity to set the record straight, clear up some confusion and share some good news: MS Paint is here to stay, it will just have a new home soon, in the Windows Store where it will be available for free.

"Paint 3D the new app for creativity, also available for free with the Windows 10 Creators Update, will continue to get new feature updates. In addition to the new 3D capabilities, many of the MS Paint features people know and love like photo editing, line and curve tools, and 2D creation are in Paint 3D.

"So, thanks for all the MS Paint love, keep the feedback coming via the Paint 3D app, and keep creating!"

Crazy to think that they would get rid of it after so long.

Paint used to be my sh*eettt.
But I have a Mac, so regardless this change won't be affecting me much.
Crazy to think they'd get rid of Microsoft Paint after decades of improvements though.

The memories of drawing the ugliest pictures of the friends you were sitting beside in a class with computers... nothing beat it back then.
