Chechen authorities have allegedly rounded up more than 100 men who are suspected to be gay and subjected to torture and murder, according to a Russian newspaper and human rights campaigners.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has endorsed polygamy and is anti-gay

Newspaper Novaya Gazeta found that dozens of men aged between 16 and 50 had mysteriously disappeared off the streets and three people were killed in the round up. Among the men were well known faces on local television and religious leaders.

In Chechnya, the command was given for a prophylactic sweep and it went as far as real murders, Novaya Gazeta reported, adding that authorities posed as men looking for dates online.

Spokesman for Chechnyas leader Ramzan Kadyrov, Alvi Karimov, said the report was absolute lies and disinformation and claimed gay people did not exist in the state.

You cannot detain and persecute people who simply do not exist in the republic, he told Interfax news agency.

If there were such people in Chechnya, the law-enforcement organs wouldnt need to have anything to do with them because their relatives would send them somewhere from which there is no returning.

It is the first time gay people in Chechnya have been targeted on such a scale, said Tatyana Lokshina of the Human Rights Watch in Moscow.

Its a vicious attack against LGBT people. Its happened for several weeks under order of leadership, she told The Independent, adding she had heard the information from various sources, including people on the ground.

They beat them up viciously, they torture them, they humiliate them, and there are reports that three people have been killed, she said.

The arrests allegedly started after gay rights group GayRussia.ru applied for permits for gay pride parades, which were denied. The group filed the permits anyway, hoping to take the fight to the European Court of Human Rights.

This isn't surprising at all. Chechen people do come from Russia but we have a lot of conflict with people from Chechnya. Believe me, I hate Chechen people, the one time I ever ventured far south of Russia and ended up Dagestan (don't know why we did), I am surprised the group of friends I was with, did not end up shot or stabbed with how shit everything went quickly and it's not even Chechnya per se but I believe in the late 80's early 90's the Chechen Mafia was all over the place. Then one day they decided to invade Dagestan, Putin bombed the shit out of them and now Dagestan is some shithole that is completely ghetto.

Anyways I strayed way off topic. I've said this before when replying to a topic about gay rights some months back but gays aren't a big thing in Russia. This stuff happens all the time but not directly carried out by authorities, in fact regular citizens will even assault, kill or try to kidnap known gays. I mentioned in that post having a gay pride parade in Russia is like signing a death wish, especially if someone recognizes you. As mentioned above, Chechnya is unfortunately considered Russian since they are completely surrounded by us on all 4 sides, but I would say they're more of off the hinge when it comes to things. A lot of Chechen people are very shady and apparently others in Europe fear them based off the crime rate in Chechnya and the stories about a lot of them (despite there being I believe like 4 million of them.) Best example would be the Moscow Theater Hostage Crisis in which armed Chechen caused a terrorism incident and maybe the whole Russian soldiers being beheaded by Chechen's in the early 2000's and shared around the internet. There are other incidents about cab drivers in Chechnya kidnapping people and demanding money that could make people uneasy however that happens around the world, but still that and other stories like that do make some people uneasy about them. Turkey also sees Chechnya positively which does make some people also uneasy due to Turkey's own record. Islam also plays a huge role in most Chechen life, which further makes the fact that gays are being executed not surprising. At this point, this news should not surprise anyone because it's going to get worse, I would even say it could get to the point that it spews outside of Chechnya and along the borders of other Federal Subjects when it comes to authorities taking action; kind of like authorities actively crossing the borders going on witch hunts for gays. It can be said that Kadyrov is a Putin vassal as he would fight with Russia if a full scale war ever broke out between Russia and Ukraine, but Kadyrov is still seen as a gangster at the end of the day and the people he appoints are just as bad as him if not worse, I remember reading roughly 17 months back that his Defense Minister laid some sort of siege on a teenage girl's home until she agreed to become one of his newest wives.
