Smallest engine as possible mate, 1.0 or 1.2 for your first year , then after that save up for a bad boy.
VW Polo
SEAT Arosa
Vauxhall Corsa
Toyota Yaris

It really doesn't matter, insurance is a killer in the UK. So just buy a literal piece of sh** and wait before you get a nice car.

EDIT: The cars listed above are 1 Litre , there are plenty of others that are 1.2 or 1.1, it really doesn't matter. Just something to get you from A to B for your first 12 months.

To show you and some others how bad the insurance is in the UK i've done a quick quote.

On a 17 year old car, a VW Polo , 1 Litre Engine, Unmodified, Third Party Fire & Theft Insurance
(Not Fully Covered)

Insane amount of money for such a cheap car.
And not even fully covered by insurance!

Whats your budget?

Insurance is going to be a bomb regardless of what car, at the age of 19. Look at getting a blackbox policy as that reduces your insurance premium massively, like 50% in some quotes. Also look at adding an experienced driver as an additional driver onto the policy, this sometimes reduces your premium too.

Vauxhall Corsa
Renault Clio
Ford Fiesta

Don't get a Volkswagen!

Try not to go for 3 cylinder cars as they are annoying when you're stationary with constant jitter of the engine

Look on gocompare.com they do really good deals. My 1.4 Peugeot 206 was £1,300 to insure with black box.

Why not get a VW? I had an '04 Polo 1.4 and never had any issues with it.

VW's are recommended by a lot of people as a first car for beginner drivers.

They break down all the time or have problems.

My sister has worked in loads of dealerships from VW, Jaguar, Audi and Hyundai (probably more but idk) she said that VW are the worse cars to go for. She had so many customers come in everyday for problems compared to the other dealerships. The technicians there also agreed they're the worst as well.

I disagree completely, my Polo never had issues and neither has any of my friends or family that have owned Polo's & Golfs.

I stand by my statement that VWs are probably one of the best starter vehicles.
