insurance prices will be through the roof on a 2L car for his 1st.

only if he lives in the UK. Other countries it isn't nearly as bad. You guys are stuck with crummy 1.3L and shit for your first car less you want to spend more on insurance than the car is worth.

If he lives in the US, that will not be so heavily factored. I have a 06 GTI and pay 1900 a year, im only 18.

002 wrote Good for you understanding what a first vehicle is about lol.

Honestly, there is no good or bad vehicle when it comes down to that price range because they will all be old and you're just hoping to find one that will last a little bit.

My recomendation to you is just go around to dealership lots, find a vehicle style you like, go home and research it a little bit and find out if those are problems you can live with. Then go look for the vehicle on dealer lots or private party people, and before you even discuss price, HAVE A MECHANIC CHECK IT OVER. I'm not talking let uncle fill look for leaks, I'm saying spend the 100 dollars and have it compression tested, make sure the gears in the tranny are fine, etc. If the person won't let you do this, just assume there's something wrong with the car they don't want you to see and walk away.

I made a couple threads you should take a look at:

Can second this.

If your from the UK then I would recommend something that is cheap road tax and low engine size. Anything above a 1.6L then your looking at £2500 for your first year which could cost more than the car itself in some cases.

If you go for a 1.4L you can get insurance for around £1500 with a black box fitted.
