First of all I know this varies from country to country but was just wondering on what peoples thoughts were on the education system where they live. I would also like to say that this is just my opinion and I don't want to have to move this topic to the rant section
I'm from Scotland and I think the Scottish education system is terrible(for some or at least me). By the time I left primary school(elementary school) I feel my fate was already decided. I was placed in the lowest level maths class(national 3 also known as foundation level) and the lowest level in English. From there on every single year we were taught the same thing over and over again instead of moving on and learning something knew. The pupils in that class were never given an opportunity to progress and learn new things which i believe can be easily taught given the pupil listen's etc. What I was being taught was very very basic and I'm pretty sure children in America who are as young as 8 are being taught.
I had to repeat this shit for 4 years constantly being taught the same thing over and over again until we reached level 5.
As for my other subjects I was taken out of them as I was being accused of smoking weed which I wasn't. I smoked cigarettes during my last year at school but that was it. The first time I was brought into one of the staff members office and was confronted about drug use and was told if they suspected anything again they would phone the police. I wasn't so worried about this as I knew I had done nothing wrong and just laughed it off. The problem started to escalate and letters started getting sent to my parents, a teacher who I got along with told me that one of the other teachers had suspicions and asked me nicely if I had been smoking weed and I obviously said no because I hadn't been. I had also messed up my sleeping pattern and was turning up a little late during one week and I was again confronted and the person asked "has anything you have been doing outside of school been affecting your sleeping pattern" and I just explained that I simply wasn't getting enough sleep but then she dropped the bomb and asked if had been smoking weed. By this point I felt shit, I understand that some people see no harm in weed and that's cool but the problem as that I wasn't smoking it and the people accusing me obviously didn't have a good opinion on it.
I tried bringing this up with my guidance teacher and she then moved me out of all classes apart from Maths and English as she thought this was the best decision...gg. I was then baking muffins upstairs instead of working towards any qualifications besides basic maths and English which will not get me anywhere. Spent most of a year baking muffins.
The impact this had on me really hit me when I applied for college where I was again put on a really low level digital media course, basically learning Microsoft Word. It will take me 4 years to earn obtain the grades needed to get onto a degree course for Computer Science. I don't let this stop me from learning, I've used khan academy to learn Math and I'm fully capable. I've even tested my knowledge by downloading past exam papers which were at a higher level from the Scottish qualifications website and I was confident answering all questions.

I'd say you get out of the system what you put in. If you go to school on the daily to be a **** you're going to fail. If you want to learn you will learn.
I've always gone to reasonably good schools and am from an affluent area though so someone else may have a different opinion.
As for college ect, more relaxed, seemed like teachers didn't actually give a **** but still passed my course so it was calm.
As for uni, I can give my opinion on that in a few months when I've started.

Agree with you on that, teachers are very laid back at the college I'm attending at the moment and it doesn't come across well

The way I feel about the education system is that they teach every student the same way, give them the same tests, and if they don't excel in that one way they are labeled as dumb. Also, from a young age we are taught to obey the rules given to us by a school and learn information that doesn't make us thrive.

mmm, I wouldn't go as far as not caring but I guess there are some parents that just don't understand where their child wants to go in life and therefore not able to give the best advice.

I'm from the USA and it's a bunch of BS.
Ok, where to begin? We decided that this "no child left behind" idea was the best thing ever. This is where kids like me who just want to get work done are screwed because Johnny over there wants to be a jackass and screw around. The teacher has to stop and try to get Johnny on track and it never works. Come test day we only know half of what's on the test.
Ok, next. We have this idea that kids can't deal with bullies on their own. I'm sure you've seen the movies or heard the stories where someone is getting bullied, they fight the bully, and blah blah blah, right? Nope, no more. We have to talk to an "adult" about it. Long story short, nothing gets done, you can read my story / experience in the matter below.
Next, I briefly talked about this in my little rant about my experience with bullies and how it had to be handled, but have you ever heard "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer"? Schools get funding from the government, and that funding depends on the test scores / GPA of the students there. The higher the scores, the more funds. Lower scores get less funding. This means that the school with all "A" students gets a lot of funding for stuff they really don't need and the schools that have poor grades because 20 students share 5 books gets no funding. Ever wonder how bad the spending is? I remember an announcement from my old highschool asking the students what should be shown on the TV. Turns out that the school bought a 52" TV with the funds and they had no idea what to do with it.
Also, teachers HAVE to teach you a bunch of crap even if it's not true. I didn't realize this until the 8th grade when I had arguably the best teacher I've ever had. He gave us the best education but unfortunately made some poor personal decisions. Anyway, he'd say "now this is what the government says I have to teach you, so here's a slide on it and write it down for the test. Now here's some discrepancies I find in this, now go home and look it up if you want to know the truth". Us being a bunch of kids asked him why can't he just tell us the truth. Anything said by a teacher besides what the government says they need to say is merely an "opinion" and they can get in a lot of trouble for expressing their opinions. For example, they have to say 9/11 was caused by X. My teacher would say "I have a hard time with this because jet fuel can't melt those beams" and basically entice us to go home and look it up for ourselves. Since that's all just considered an opinion or a conspiracy, here's a couple for you. School teaches you that Einstein invented the theory of relativity when it was really Henri Poincar. Also look at Thomas Edison and the light bulb. School says he invented it when it really wasn't him. Some of the top names you'll hear are Nikola Tesla, Joseph Swan, and Humphry Davy.
This is just my opinion, but most of highschool should honestly be college courses. I as a carpenter don't need to know when America was discovered, or need to understand Romeo and Juliet. If I have a brief knowledge of history and the English language, I'm fine.

I was "bullied" for 3.5 years, and I jumped through the school's hoops. Let's start at the beginning, this kid wanted my answers from a program we watched. I told him he should've paid attention instead of talking to his friends. He jumps on the racist boat and says "oh it's because I'm Mexican", and starts pushing me and it goes downhill from there. Me, being the ignorant kid that I was, did what the school said I should do, talk to the teacher. The teacher talks to the kid and nothing happens. A week later I go to the counselor. The counselor wants to take ME out of the class. I told him no, I'm not the problem and after about a month they move that kid out of the class. Ok, now we have this on record this kid and I have an issue with each other.
Highschool comes. Not only do they put us in the same class, but we sit right next to each other. This is the first day of school, so I talk to the teacher and he told me we have to wait until something happens. I said that's BS and told the principal. He said the exact same thing. I said it's not going to last long, and sure enough, it didn't. The kid tried the same crap, I told the teacher, and he got moved again. Not suspended, no detention, just moved. He was moved to the next class over, so at the end of the period he tried to do the same crap. Again I tell the teacher and this time they kick him out. For a semester.... Now we thing everything is hunky dory and guess what? He's in my same class again (different class, but none the less we're in the same class). Again, this didn't work and for the next semester (until the end of the year) he tries to bully me, gets suspended for 3 days, it's the same crap. He's there Monday, get suspended until Thursday, comes back, gets suspended, it just keeps repeating its self.
Now 10th grade comes. Ok, maybe things will be better. NOPE. He's in 2 of my classes now. Again I let the teachers know, we can't do anything until something happens, I go the principal, he says the same thing, it's an exact repeat of the 9th grade. The only difference is, instead of just getting frustrated with the ideas these morons had, I gave them two options. The second day of the 10th grade I literally went into the office with all of my complaints and what they classify as "accidents" with this kid. I still have them and guess how many there were? 5? 10? 50? Try 108 separate instances where this kid tried to bully me. I said this is BS, either kick him the hell out of this school, or I'm going to get expelled and he's leaving in an ambulance. At that time I was dead serious. I wasn't going to use a weapon, I'm 5'10 250, I'm a big dude. This kid was maybe 5'8 at best and 150 soaking wet. Needless to say nothing happened that day, but at the end of the week the kid tried bullying me again. I gave the principal another warning. Either you deal with this kid accordingly, or I leave and report this school. The reason my leaving the school is a big issue is because I'm an "A" student (or was at least), and they get funding based on the average GPA of the school. I sit well up there and help them out with that.. Nothing happened so I filed paperwork with another school and reported all the issues I had with the kid to the school board along with the "resolutions". The last day of the semester comes and I get called down to the principal office. I get a warning from the principal that I had better not do anything stupid to this kid because he knows it's my last day and things can still happen, and blah blah blah. I looked at him and said "what are you going to do? Expel me?" He's going on about all the legal recourse that could happen so I said then I should just sue the school for the harassment from this kid that you guys aren't dealing with? And with that I left. I never seen this kid that day though. Probably a month or so passes and I am going to hang out with some friends so I drive up to the school and guess who's there trying to start crap? Yep, the same moron. Guess who's on the other side of the parking lot? Yep, the principal. I walked over to the principal and said he'd better handle this otherwise he's going to be staying a little later and filling out some paper work. He did nothing, the kid went back to pushing me and I laid him out. I used to agree with that sentiment but now I'm not as certain.
I think it might be a myth that everybody excels in different ways to the extent that solving that problem would hugely increase the efficacy of the education system.
I don't think that there is as much difference between how people learn and how accurately you can use a standardized test to determine people's abilities to retain information as proponents of that argument would like us to believe.
I'm not saying that the rigidity of the system is not a problem, I'm saying that it might not be the problem.
I think that in the developed world any student can get as much help, guidance, or learning materials to suit their learning style as they need if they simply ask for it.
That was my experience anyway, and unfortunately when talking about the education system many of the ideas put forward are inherently anecdotal because so many schools operate differently.
Any kind of consensus across all schools is improbable, if not impossible, to find I think.

Anything said by a teacher besides what the government says they need to say is merely an "opinion" and they can get in a lot of trouble for expressing their opinions. For example, they have to say 9/11 was caused by X. My teacher would say "I have a hard time with this because jet fuel can't melt those beams" and basically entice us to go home and look it up for ourselves. Since that's all just considered an opinion or a conspiracy, here's a couple for you. School teaches you that Einstein invented the theory of relativity when it was really Henri Poincar. Also look at Thomas Edison and the light bulb. School says he invented it when it really wasn't him. Some of the top names you'll hear are Nikola Tesla, Joseph Swan, and Humphry Davy.
This is just my opinion, but most of highschool should honestly be college courses. I as a carpenter don't need to know when America was discovered, or need to understand Romeo and Juliet. If I have a brief knowledge of history and the English language, I'm fine.
