I have a old crappy windows computer I am giving to my grandfather for his art studio/office and I would like to know how I can clear this computer completely without windows 7 install disk?

You're gonna need an install disk or at least a USB, but check that it can boot from a USB before going ahead and making the bootable usb.

If you don't want to pay for a new copy of Windows, you can easily find a copy online, mount it to USB or burn it to CD and then reinstall Windows from there.

Failing that, there's always free operating systems to use. Linux is your man; openSUSE is a pretty good distro to choose.

Get a USB and download Hirens boot CD.

There are multiple tools on that one CD which you can use to wipe the HDD clear.

But doesn't he just want to format the HDD and reinstall? Wouldn't it be easier to let Windows installer take care of that?
