Recently my Laptop decided it would like to die.

Sadly i have been told that my laptop is stuck on a reboot loop by a friend. My laptop is on Windows 7 and recently i came home to find that my laptop no longer starts up. Instead it continues to run to the windows screen before log in and then either returns to the starting options page or freezes at on a black screen. Sadly i have forgotten my first ever login password aswell so i can't do the return to factory defaults option.

Is there any chance of me fixing it myself, and if i took it to a repair shop would they be able to repair it? Any information would be of help:)

Try to boot your laptop up in Safe Mode With Networking. To do this, turn on your laptop, and repeatedly press the F8 button on your keyboard to bring up the Windows Diagnostic Boot Menu. Use the up or down arrows to highlight the Safe Mode With Networking option, and press Enter to select.

If all goes well, it will boot your laptop into Safe Mode, and from there, you can run some scans on your computer to see if there may be any possible viruses. While in Safe Mode, I would suggest trying to update drivers for your laptop. Easiest way for you to do this is go to the Acer website, look up your laptop model, and find the downloads/support section for driver updates.

Also, go to your command prompt to run the System File Checker, this may help relieve possible issues also. To get to your command prompt, click on Start, and in the search box, type "cmd" no quotations. In the results pane above, you'll see the icon for the command prompt (a little black square), right click on that icon and select "Run as Administrator" if you see the option, if not, just select "open". Once the command prompt comes up, type "sfc /scannow" without quotations. Let this run all the way through its duration... this may take a long time to complete.

This may not be the absolute cause of your problem, but in my experience, alot of BSOD crashes are due to driver version conflicts, or corrupted drivers altogether.

Another possibility is your winlogon.exe, which controls the user session. Try the above steps first. If you keep running into the boot loops when trying to get into safe mode, I suggest locating your Windows 7 Install Disc, or Acer Recovery Disc -- and do a repair/reinstall of Windows 7.

Sounds like the OS is corrupted. If you can, get a Windows 7 installation disc and format the HDD. Then do a clean, fresh install. It should fix the problem.
