Here Is A Topic On Xbox Errors And Problems

Open Tray Error

This problem will usually appear immediately after you put a game in the CD tray. The screen says Reading Disc and then the message changes to Open Tray. Once you get this message, no games can be played. If youre experiencing this problem, then you might want to read this article to find out what is going on and how you can fix it.

Why does this happen?

This problem is happening because there is a problem with either the DVD laser or the tray/optical sensor may have failed. At this point, there is no need to troubleshoot the problem and repairs are needed for you to be able to play games again. You have several options:

Send the console to Microsoft for repairs

Besides having a technical support team, there is a service center where you can send your console for repairs. Many people choose this option when they have a valid warranty because repairs are free. If the warranty has expired or is voided due to console tampering, then expect to pay $150 in repairs and to get your unit back in 4 weeks time.

Repair the console using a third party repair service

There are several companies, besides Microsoft that can fix this problem. Some are good and some, well, are a bit shady. It is a bit cheaper getting it fixed using one of these companies, not by much. If you use one that is not reputable, they may create bigger problems than fixing the original one. Proper care and research must be taken here. You must take a leap of faith and put your trust in these companies. You need to decide if youre willing to risk this with your treasured console.

Xbox 360 won't turn on

Bad power supply
If your device is properly plugged in, but the power supply is hot, unplug all connections and let the components cool for at least an hour. If the problem persists after cooling the power supply, you may need to replace the power supply.
Bad RF Module board
If the power supply is fine, the problem may be the RF Module board. If it has been damaged, you will need to replace it.
Bad Motherboard
If the you still have the same problem after checking the above, you may have a problem with your motherboard. It is a common problem for soldered joints on the motherboard to crack. If this is the case, it is possible to solder or re-flow the connections.

Xbox Live Won't Connect

go to start on your pc,click run and type in cmd then click ok.black window appears, type in ipconfig/all or getmac(depends on pc)and hit return.now copy the details shown:
physical address-
ip address-
subnet mask-
default gateway-dns servers(first number is primary and second is the alternative)
Now shut down pc and set top box and 360.Then plug the ethernet cable into the 360.
Switch the 360 on and go to xbox live and account info.
Go to settings and go to ip address/subnet mask/gateway and press A.
Then go to dns server set configure to manual and input the info from your pc into the boxes.
Now go to primary dns/alternate dns and press A.
Then go to pppoe settings, this should be configure set as off, press A.
At the mac address type in info from pc which was against physical address(mixture of letters and numbers)
Now switch on set top box and let it reboot. When its on fully go to xbox menu and press connect.
The set top box will now think its talking to the pc rather than the xbox and should connect.
Now just sign in and give your details.
If it still doesnt let you connect then reboot the set top box with the xbox on and hopefully it will work.

Xbox 360 won't read discs

Scratched discs
Discs that are extremely scratched will not be read by the console. Put a clean, unscratched disc in the the drive. If your Xbox 360 plays the disc without issue, then the scratched discs were the problem.
Dirty laser lens
If the problem is not due to a scratched disc, then there might be dust on the lens of the optical drive that is keeping it from reading discs. Remove the optical drive from the console and thoroughly clean it.
Bad optical drive
If the Xbox 360 will still not read discs after cleaning the optical drive, then your optical drive is likely faulty. Replacing a defective DVD drive with a replacement DVD drive does not work, since the replacement has a different DVD drive key, which the game console won't accept.

Can't save game data

Try as you might, your Xbox 360 won't save your game.

Bad hard drive
If your Xbox 360 isn't saving your in-game data, your hard drive is most likely either full or damaged. Make sure the hard drive is connected properly, assure there is enough free space for the save, and then attempt to save again. If this does not work, you may need to replace the hard drive.

HardDrive Error

Replacing the motherboard and hard drive as a pair is the easiest option to fix. Alternatively a modchip can be installed on the mother board to allow access to the drive and an unlocked hard drive can be installed. This is a delicate task and not an easy option to undertake, it is not recommended for the inexperienced. Special bios and utilities are necessary, some of these tools may not be legal since they may have been developed using Microsoft code so we are not able to recommend any nor post/point you in the direction of where they can be found.

Notes on Hard drives, more here See also A way to retrieve your hard drive key from your eeprom

You CANNOT just swap out the IDE drive with a new one. The Hard Drive is locked using an ATA specification that locks the hard drive unless a password is provided. Each hard drive has a unique password that is transmitted in plain text to the drive on boot up to make it useable. If the drive is not properly locked you will receive an error 5, this is due to the retail bios requiring a locked drive. If you wanted to install a replacement drive into a console with a bad drive (CCS 07 error) you would first need to install a modchip that has a bios that supports unlocked drives. Then you could lock the drive using disk utilities (LiveInfo, ConfigMagic, Slayers disk etc) and remove the modchip... or leave it in for that matter. Please do not ask for links to the software or where to find it.

Another method of doing this is to put your PC next to the Xbox, use the Xbox to unlock the drive by powering it up, then swap the cable to the PC IDE cable and then allow your PC to detect it. Details If you have an Xbox with bad Hard Drive the process to swap gets a bit more complicated and there is no possibility of doing this without installing a modchip.

If you are hoping to salvage a drive from a broken Xbox you will need to first unlock it before a PC could gain access to it. So if you have a dead mother board this makes use of the old drive difficult. see

What Red Rings Do

1 Red Ring

Your system indicates this error when only the bottom right part of the ring is flashing. When you have 1 red light on the Xbox 360, it is usually associated with an error code you see on the screen, such as the Xbox 360 error code E74.

Searching for this error code online or in the Microsoft support site will give you the description and solution. Usually the problem lies on the DVD drive whether it is the wrong firmware or lacks a chip.

It may also be a hard drive error which can be resolved by taking it out and putting it back in or it can be a voltage error which usually occurs if you have added accessories to it. It is best to research the error code so you know exactly what to do.

2 Red Lights

One of the most common is when two red lights are flashing. No need to panic if you see only see the Xbox 360 2 red lights. Its sole meaning is that the console is too hot and needs to cool down. Power down the system and try again in a few minutes or if possible after an hour or two.

After giving the system some rest and playing in a much cooler environment, you should be back to your gaming in better performance. If the problem persists however, you may need to have it serviced to have the cooling issue fixed.

3 Red Lights

If you see three flashing lights, you are experiencing the infamous Xbox three red lights problem that many other gamers are frustrated with. You may also know it as the Red Ring of Death.

At one point 1 out of every 3 Xbox 360 owners experienced this problem. This is the one error that you do not want to get. This highlights that there is a serious Xbox 360 hardware problem.

Your options are to send your console back to Microsoft for repair or to fix it yourself. Be prepared to spend a nice amount of money ($140 or so) if you are sending your system to Microsoft and you no longer have the Xbox 360 warranty.

If you want to try to fix the problem yourself then you can see reviews of guides that we recommend to show you step by step how to perform the repair.

4 Red Lights

If you have to get any flashing lights on your Xbox 360, pray that this is the one. If the entire ring flashes, it is a minor problem that indicates that the AV cable isnt connected properly or in rare instances, the cable is damaged. Make sure everything is properly connected and replace it if It still doesnt work.

--==ERROR Codes==--
If there is a problem with the Xbox360 The LEDs in the ring of light will flash in a particular pattern. The pattern itself leads some insight to the problem. Certain patterns will lead to numbered error codes which will provide further insight to the problem. The numbered error codes are described below their corresponding LED code.

After reading this guide if you'd like to discuss the problems you're experiencing with others you can do so in the following thread:
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

these are the codes we know so far...
Please contribute if you know of new codes that are not part of this list.

=============================

Sections 1, 2, 3, and 4 are flashing red
- The AV cable cannot be detected
/ \
\ /

THINGS TO TRY
1.Make sure that the AV cable is correctly connected to the Xbox 360 console.
2.Disconnect the AV cable from the Xbox 360 console, and then reconnect the AV cable to the Xbox 360 console.
3.If the four flashing red lights continue to flash, try wiping the metal area of the AV pack with a dry cloth. The metal area is the end that plugs into the console. Wipe the metal area thoroughly, and then try the AV Pack again.
4.If the AV cable is correctly connected but the four red lights are still flashing, substitute a different AV cable if you have one available.
=============================

Sections 1, 3, and 4 are flashing red
- General Hardware Failure
/ \
\ /

Check the secondary Error Code per the instructions in the section below

THINGS TO TRY
1.Try restarting the console.
2.If restarting the console does not resolve the behavior, follow these steps:
Turn the console off.
Unplug all the power and AV cables from the console.
Unplug the power cord from the wall socket.
Firmly reconnect all the cables.
Turn on the console.
3.If these steps do not resolve the behavior, turn the console off, remove the hard drive, and then turn on the console. If the 3x Red LED error light is no longer displayed, turn the console off, re-attach the hard drive, and then turn on the console.
4.Also examine the lights on the power supply. When you turn on the console, the power supply light should illuminate green even if the three lights on the RoL flash red.
=============================

Sections 1, and 3 are flashing red
- Overheating
/ \
\ /
Alternatively Overheating can be cause by the console locking up or "freezing" after a set amount of time. Lockups that occur at a specific point in a game are generally problems with the game itself and not caused by overheating.

THINGS TO TRY
1.Let the Xbox 360 console cool.
Note You may have to wait several hours for the console to cool enough. Do not turn on the console when the console is hot.
2.Verify that the console has sufficient ventilation and that the fan is operating. For more information about ventilation, see the "More Information" section.
PREVENTION SUGGESTIONS
To try to prevent this problem, use the following precautions:
Do not block any ventilation openings on the Xbox 360 console.
Do not put the Xbox 360 console on a bed, on a sofa, or on any other soft surface that may block ventilation openings.
Do not put the Xbox 360 console in a confined space, such as a bookcase, a rack, or a stereo cabinet, unless the space is well-ventilated.
Do not put the Xbox 360 console near any heat source, such as a radiator, a heat register, a stove, or an amplifier.
DO NOT EVER PUT YOUR CONSOLE IN THE FREEZER OR OUT IN COLD WEATHER
Some people think that doing this might help "fix" an overheating console, in fact doing so could cause even bigger problems. Electronic devices like your console are made to function at and around room temperature, extreme cold temperatures can often cause just as many problems as extreme warm temperatures (such as overheating). Also if the console is located in a dramatically cold area while running, the difference in temperature between the hot console and cold air can create condensation which in turn will short out your console making the situation far worse. Condensation will happen more quickly if your console is overheating due to the greater difference in temperature. In short... DON'T DO IT.

A more aggressive Solution to overheating is to improve the cooling system of the console. The best solution is to replace the thermal compound. If you attempt this you do so at your own risk. If you're console is still under warranty it is recommended that you contact MS for a replacement before attempting to fix it yourself.

=============================

Section 4 is flashing red
- Hardware Failure
/ \
\ /

The Specific Type of hardware failure can be determined by the error code displayed on the screen.
If the screen is blank or you would like additional information follow the instructions for determining the secondary error code in the section below

E01: possibly a power supply problem

E02: possibly a Network Interface problem (might be fixed by loosening the x-clamps)

E03: possibly Power problem could be the PSU could be the GPU/CPU, somehow the console isn't getting clean power from the power supply.

E04: Unconfirmed: There is a problem with the Southbridge Chip usually dealing with how it connects to the mainboard (cold solder joint/bridged solder joints)

E05: CPU over heating - If you are receiving this error after disassembling your console make sure to all 8 of the heatsinc screws are tightened securely to the board/heatsink holes.

E06: GPU over heating -ensure your x-clamps are installed properly.

E07: RAM over heating

E08: Unconfirmed: General I/O Malfunction, could be caused by an error with any of the I/O devies such as A/V port, USB, Hard drive, DVD drive, etc. over torquing of the AV or heatsync bolts can cause this error.

E09: Unconfirmed: This can be caused by two completely different things either:
A. DVD Drive Time out - Can be caused by problems with a firmware flash. This is also speculated to sometime be caused by a problem with the southbridge chipset on the motherboard based on how it connects to the DVD drive.
B. GPU error, generally caused by a poor connection to the mainboard (cold solder joints/bridged solder joints) See error E18 for more information

E10: Unconfirmed: CPU error, generally caused by a poor connection to the mainboard (cold solder joints/bridged solder joints). This can also be triggered by an error with the TSOP.

E11: (not yet known)

E12: Possibly a problem with temperature control

E13: Unknown: could be caused by a short between the heatsink and surrounding capacitors

E14: (not yet known)

E15: (not yet known)

E16: Unknown: Likely a cold solder join in GPU or Ram chips (see error E18)

E17: (not yet known)

E18: Error in the "Digital Backbone" (CPU/GPU/RAM), this is usually caused by a cold solder joint between the GPU and the mainboard.
There are two theories to fixing this one deals with the "X" clamps that hold down the chips. The other involves re-Heating the chips. DO NOT attempt either of these if your console is still under warranty. If your console is still under warranty return it to the store where it was purchased or call MS to have it replaced.

E19: Unknown: GPU Error this is usually caused by bridged solder points where the GPU connects to the mainboard. see error E18 for more detailed information

E20: likely a Ram error, this can be caused by a cold or bridged solder joint on one of the Ram chips.
...
E32: (not yet known)

E33: (not yet known)

E34: (not yet known)

E35: over heating GPU possibly due to lack of thermal compound.
...
E45: Unknown (possibly dashboard update related)

E52: (not yet known)

E64: DVD Drive Error - Dvd drive timed out during reset :Wrong firmware, dvd is without f/w chip, etc. This can also be caused by the tray not being fully closed on boot. also it could mean that the Kernel can't be launched/signature in NAND Flash chip is broken It could be possible after bad update. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] This might also be caused by a bad SATA cable.

E65: DVD Drive Error - Dvd drive is not DMA configured :Wrong firmware, dvd is without f/w chip, etc. This can also be caused by the tray not being fully closed on boot.

E66: DVD Drive Error - Dvd drive pairing failure: DVD model, or version does not match that of the version expected by the dashboard. OR the firmware version on the drive is older then the firmware version expected by the dashboard. Make sure the DVD drive is of the same version originally included with the console and that it is using either the original firmware included with the console or newer. if drive can eject, read, and write under windows but errors on console, replacing original firmware should fix issue.

E67: Hard Drive Error - Hard drive timed out during reset: It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it.

E68: Hard Drive Error - Hard drive not DMA configured: It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it. Also this can be caused by a problem with the fans that make them draw too much power, it can also be caused if you have unnecessary accessories attached to the console like an external fan unit. Attempt to remove unnecessary accessories first, and then necessary components such as the hard drive and USB devices. If you have any case mods you may want to investigate those as well.

E69: Hard Drive Error - Reading the HD Security sector failed: It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it

E70: Hard Drive Error - Hard drive not found

E71: Dashboard Error - Error within Xam.xex: possibly a dashboard update error, Check below in the "Console Reset Codes" for instructions. If that does not work there is no other solution and the console must be sent back to MS for repair.

E72: Dashboard Error - Error within Xam.xex: Like a problem with the NAND flash

E73: I/O Hardware Error - Couldn't calibrate HSIO Bus from edram: this error is likely caused by a problem with the Ethernet port or supporting control devices

E74: I/O Hardware Error - HSIO related, could be crc error, or many things: There is high chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection) it can also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first. Microsoft covers this error under their 3-year warranty, this is availble to anyone who hasn't modified their console. contact MS to get a free replacement console before attempting to fix this yourself. Failing that this error In some cases it is a problem with the GPU and may be repairable by doing the x-clamp replacement (see error 0102)

E75: Ethernet Error - Couldn't read ethernet phy vendor: Strange but sometimes caused by the DVD drive not being connected properly.

E76: Ethernet Error - Couldn't complete ethernet reset: This error is usually cased by the Ethernet port's controller chip, a dead chip may not cause the error but removing the Ethernet controller chip does, it may also be caused by other Ethernet related problems.

E77: Ethernet Error - phy request is already processing/reading reg failed/Failed to write reg: This error is sometimes caused by power problems with the RAM chips. It might be cause by a short between the heat sink and resistors or by more serious problems with the RAM. [more info]

E78: Dashboard Error - AsicId check failed

E79: Dashboard Error - Couldn't start xam.xex: probably a file system corruption, it could also be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it.

E80: Dashboard Error - Wrong LDV version in NAND Flash: This is in new dashboard. You have the update but haven't R3T6 resistor. You can:
-Downgrade to old dashboard, solder back the resistor and then update your xbox
-If you have CPU Key, get current NAND Flash image and fix LDV (just add 1 up to latest kernel). (See error 1100)

--==SECONDARY ERROR CODES==-
The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a "hidden" error code
Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.
You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:All four lights flashing - 0
One light flashing - 1
Two Lights flashing - 2
Three lights flashing - 3

--==Power Supply Color Codes==--
no light - No Power - Power supply is not receiving power from the mains
Green - Power On - Power supply is plugged in and receiving power from the mains and the console is powered on.
Orange - Stand By - Power supply is plugged in and receiving power from the mains but the console has not yet been powered on.
Red - Power Supply Error, Power supply is plugged in and receiving power from the mains, but there is a problem preventing it from delivering power.
this can be caused by the following:
overheating - this is commonly caused by lack of ventilation, check to make sure there is a lot of open space around the power supply, that the air temp in the room is cool, and that the vents are free from dust and debris. Also check to make sure the fan is still functioning properly
incorrect voltage - this can be caused by the power supply being plugged into an outlet that is not providing the proper voltage for the power supply to function properly.
too much current draw - this means that the console is drawing too much power from the power supply. This is most commonly in modded consoles this can be caused by excessive LEDs or other extraneous hardware, in non-modded consoles this most often caused by short somewhere; a common problem is USB ports that have been damaged and the pins inside the port are shorting out on each other.
