Could someone link me to a tutorial on how to marry a new disc drive to my xbox 360?

You need the old drive and go like you were going to flash it to a modded firmware using jungleflasher copy the dvd key from the old one. Then hook the second one up to your xbox and again open jungleflasher and spoof the key that you copied from the old dvd drive.

Also is there any way i can find the correct key from the motherboard? or can i change what the motherboard classes as the 'right' key in any way?

no you need the drive to get the key/ and you cant change your key
