You will find lots of extra gear throughout the game, sometime as enemy drops, or loot in chests, also as mission rewards. when you go to your equipment screen and choose a gear slot, you will see your currently unequipped items. just hold X on an item you would like to get rid of and it will dismantle it, turning it into glimmer.
