All you need for this:

  • Scuff Pad
  • Matte White spray paint (or any color you want)
  • Any clear coat product
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Clean Rag (preferably one that doesn't have excessive lint)
  • T8H screwdriver
Watch this video for the first 1:40 to see how to take the shell of the controller off. There are 5 pieces that I consider the shell of the Xbox One Controller.
  • Front
  • Back
  • 2 Screw Covers
  • Battery Compartment

The covers are the only part that are hard to take off. If you have a pry tool, use that.

Once all of the pieces are off. Use the Scuff Pad by rubbing it on all of the parts of the controller you want to paint (If you want to have a controller like the dev controller, don't paint the back piece so don't bother Scuff'n that piece). You don't have to apply a lot of force when using the Scuff Pad. Just enough to get the surface ready to paint. Remember, you are just preparing the surface. So do not rub the Scuff Pad on the controller like it owes you money. A soft touch with gentle rubbing is all that is required You'll see the dust coming from the controller pieces.

Now, Fold the rag into a thick square and put on the top of the alcohol bottle. Pour some onto the rag and use the rag to clean off the pieces of the controller. Once you do this, do NOT touch it with your hands. Let it air dry. When you see it is clean (no streaking and/or leftover dust) you are golden.

Disclaimer It is cold out (at least where I'm at) and you need to paint these pieces in a well ventilated space BUT READ THE SPRAY BOTTLE. You can't do it outside in cold weather!
Now, shake the **** out of the spray paint of your choice. Spray light coats over all of the pieces of the controller. Enough to cover all of the areas on all of the pieces of the controller. Wait for each coat to dry for about 20 minutes before throwing another coat on. You don't have to put a lot of spray paint on every coat. Just apply more coats until you get a solid color. You don't want it to streak so like I said, DON'T apply excessive spray paint on each coat. Apply clear coats. Let it dry FOR A WHOLE DAY before putting the pieces back on the controller. Assembly is easier than taking it apart. If the back is tough to put back on, remember to push the triggers down because they get in the way. Screw the T8H screws back in with your screwdriver, snap on the screw covers, and BOOM. You have a custom controller and are happy that you did it yourself (and saved mad $$$)

NOTE:
Be sure that all the paint products you use are the same brand to avoid compatibility issues. If you are painting plastic like in this tutorial, I suggest krylon fusion, it has plastic adhesion promoters and will ensure a good strong coat. Be very light in your coats, the first one shouldnt even make a solid color, if you lay it on too thick, it wont have a chance to adhere. Same with the clear coat, extremely light coats. If you are going for a extremely smooth finish, it is recommended to wetsand very gently with 800 grit between each coat of paint/clear coat. Finish it off with a bit of polish and the controller will absolutely shine!
