Steam lets modders sell their wares, starting with 'Skyrim'

4.6
Valve's move to start selling community-created mods on its PC-game storefront looks like it could boost that $57 million user payout from earlier this year. And it's starting with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- one of the most popular moddable games. The process sounds pretty easy as Valve tells it, too. Upload your tweak to the Skyrim Creation Kit, agree to the new Steam Workshop terms, enter payment info and set your creation free. Within the week, it'll go up for sale at a price of your choosing. You can even add revenue splitting if you're working with a team and generally control the whole process from start to finish.

Mods should be free but for those who dont know how to bring in mods into their game, they will pay to at least get a taste of these mods.

This is an interesting idea, but not a good one IMO. Paying for mods makes it more like DLC. It just isn't the same, and games that are worth modding, usually are better with many mods used at the same time so paying for mods, even if they're cheap, the total could still add up to a substantial amount over time. I mean, if mods are $1 each and you're playing GTA IV, GTA V, CoD Zombies and Skyrim with mods, you could be spending a LOT of money.

Mods were always the best things about Skyrim on PC, now I have to pay for them?

How else will I get my Dragons to look like a Snorlax? :(

one of the reasons mods were good were because they were free.... now I have to pirate mods too? Money ruins everything, from YouTube, to well, everything. People think they're entitled to make money from their work, lol.

1989 Just seems like a easy way to make money. This isnt the best thing.

It does look pretty interesting tho!

OmittingCoder RIP PC GAMING. Instead of paying for the mods there should be a donate button on their steam page.

Yeah but they wanna make easy money and this is the way to do it.

Rin The beginning of the end of PC gaming. Don't know what Valve and Bethesda were thinking when they put this in.

Bethesda ? are you mentally retarded ? they gave the option to create free mods, but IT IS the Modders choice whether to charge for it. same does with the system on steam right now. it has nothing to do with Bethesda. AND IT PISSES ME OFF WHEN A RETARD THINKS SO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bethesda get a cut of the total price once sold. Game devs are allowed to set the percentage, and I'm pretty sure I heard Bethesda put theirs to receive 75% cut, or 50, with 25 for Valve.
Either way, it ruins the whole community. Mods are meant to be created for fun, that's how its always been. People can set whatever price they want too, and most of them are overpriced for what they are. Some cost more than the game itself.
I hate the idea.
