Call of Duty's three year cycle gives creative 'freedom to fail'

4.3
Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg mentioned during our recent Gamescom interview that Call of Duty's current studio cycle will keep the franchise in a lifestyle to which the audience has become accustomed. Although Call of Duty may be an annual franchise, it had been a tennis match between two studios, but earlier this year it was revealed the franchise was now on a three-studio cycle.

"That extra year of development time, particularly with the new consoles and the more powerful hardware, has really paid off thus far to iterate, innovate and try new things," said Hirshberg. "To find out which things didn't work and have the freedom to fail in the creative process, so what goes on the disc is the best ideas."

In my opinion Activision have always been better than Infinity ward for making COD but I dont like that COD is going more futuristic I think the past is better !

Thy talk about learning from their mistakes and keeping all the crappy ideas out of the game..............hopefully the three year cycle does benefit the franchise and gets some creative and games worth playing made

Hopefully Activision has learned a thing or two working with Bungie.

RSL CoD has potential. Its just boring now. Same old, same old.

Well after watching AW multiplayer gameplay, it's far from the same thing in the last Call of Duty's.

You say you want change, you get it but then you complain.." It's Titanfall 2" or Call of Halo: Titanfall".

Call of Duty died along time ago in my eyes. The last decent COD was Black Ops.

MW2 was definitely the last good CoD game, but I still think WaW is the best CoD of all time. CoD 4 is a very close second.

Too bad Treyarch only made turd games when they started out. WaW was only good because Infinity Ward was forced to give their game engine to Treyarch. Then Treyarch proceeded to make a carbon copy of CoD4 set in world war 2 or whatever and threw in zombies - the only 'innovative' addition.

You can't honestly say CoD: Big Red One and CoD 3 are terrible games.

Cod2 big red one= great, cod 3= meh

Yea you're right, but you still get the point. CoD could be doing a lot better.

If a two year cycle produce a game we all hate, one extra year can definitely make a difference.
