Call of Duty's three year cycle gives creative 'freedom to fail'

4.3
Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg mentioned during our recent Gamescom interview that Call of Duty's current studio cycle will keep the franchise in a lifestyle to which the audience has become accustomed. Although Call of Duty may be an annual franchise, it had been a tennis match between two studios, but earlier this year it was revealed the franchise was now on a three-studio cycle.

"That extra year of development time, particularly with the new consoles and the more powerful hardware, has really paid off thus far to iterate, innovate and try new things," said Hirshberg. "To find out which things didn't work and have the freedom to fail in the creative process, so what goes on the disc is the best ideas."

Maybe now IW and 3arc can get more time and make the COD series less repetitive.

TSNYC The whole 1 yr cycle made the games get old and stale very quick it's all about the money now

Where have you been. Ever since black ops released or sooner it's been all about the money. I should know I've played every cod out there.

Kex Wonder if the cycle will ever break. like Sledgehammer will just quit making the cods.

A company like sledgehammer wont just quit out of the blue. Especially with AW releasing in November. Im sure they will be around for a while!

MW2 was definitely the last good CoD game, but I still think WaW is the best CoD of all time. CoD 4 is a very close second.

Too bad Treyarch only made turd games when they started out. WaW was only good because Infinity Ward was forced to give their game engine to Treyarch. Then Treyarch proceeded to make a carbon copy of CoD4 set in world war 2 or whatever and threw in zombies - the only 'innovative' addition.

I always thought that the games would be better if there was a three-studio cycle, that way they had more time to make the game better instead of having to rush to get it out in time.

Miss Treyarch is still the best one of the three and I wish they didn't follow the future style war games.

Go back to WWII!

I think Treyarch is also my favorite out of the three because I like zombies a lot.

Yep, this is why I am digging this cycle. Maybe their problems can be ironed out before the game's release with an extra year. I am looking forward to Advanced Warfare. I hope they bring back at least some of the attention Call of Duty lost around the time of Ghosts.

No the old infinity ward was the best. I still believe that MW2 was the last good COD game. BO2 was kind of good but still wasn't good enough for me.

MW2 is Ruined By Hackers, And Its Still The Best COD
