Updated Steam Controller adds an analog stick

4.4
Ah, there it is. A new version of Valve's Steam Controller includes an analog stick on the left-hand side, replacing a series of four directional buttons previously in its place. The new controller design still has two circular track pads, four lettered buttons, bumpers and triggers, among other features included in previous iterations.

The new design shows up in the latest Steam client beta, as spotted by SteamDB and on the Facepunch forums (via Engadget).

We've tried out previous Steam Controllers in the wild, and found the latest version to be functional but awkward: "It's impressive that the Steam Controller can bounce between styles as disparate as 2D adventure and first-person puzzling, and its touch pads could become second nature over time, but it's definitely not going to provide a seamless transition from traditional controllers, at least not in its current state," our reviewer, Richard Mitchell, said.

That's as ugly as it can get.

I didn't even know they had Steam controllers, but an analog stick definitely sounds like it will make it easier to use than four directional buttons.

We could just use an Xbox360 controller because right now it kinda looks like an original xbox fat controller

Ortho Who the heck is going to buy this system? they should stick with pc

This isnt a system, this is steams controller. The steambox has no relation to this controller since the steambox is just a pc with a different OS.

Isn't the steam box trying to compete with consoles though?

Hmm.. i would guess that it's trying to go for a more niche market at this point. Maybe eventually it will attempt to compete with consoles but i am just not feeling that at the moment

I really want to see how the two circular track pads work. They seem so weird compared to an analog stick. I personally won't be buying this as I still think a keyboard would be better or a wired Xbox controller but the main problem is that the controllers just don't have enough buttons like the keyboard needed for a lot of PC games.

Nobody is going to buy it. Everyone uses the PS3 or Xbox controllers.
