DayZ lead Dean Hall to step down by end of year

4.6
DayZ creator and project lead on the standalone edition, Dean Hall, will leave developer Bohemia Interactive by year's end. Hall tells Eurogamer that he plans to start his own studio in New Zealand.

"I have a specific use. I'm really good at risk-taking and making other people take risks, I've always been good at that in my life," said Hall. "But eventually, that's the bad person to have. Eventually, you don't want the guy telling you to go over the top and get through. So at some point I'll be a disaster for the project, at least in a leadership role."

Hall said he won't leave the DayZ community in a lurch, which now numbers over 1.5 million people, but he didn't intend to be with the project this long.

Hall says, "That's why it's better to just address the elephant in the room. It's also fairer for Bohemia as well, rather than for me to just turn around one day and say 'see ya'." Bohemia had no comment on Hall's departure.

Hall says DayZ can never be the multiplayer game with the spark he wants it to be and he'll continue to "chase that" in his new company.

Hopefully they still continue to develop the game after he steps down, would like to see some more games by the DayZ crew!

slapshot101 you have to give him some props for leaving because he knows that his personally won't be the best thing for the game. I am also a bit surprised that he is fully leaving the company and not just stepping down from the leadership position.

Agreed. DayZ is a pretty good game already. If he has some good ideas and thinks it'll work, they should just go with it. He can do a lot with the game, sucks hes deciding to leave instead of just removing himself as the leadership role. Who knows though, maybe there's some "behind the scenes" reasons on why he's leaving.

Dean will continue to work on DayZ til the end of the year, and beyond if it still need help. A lot will happen in the next 10 months, DayZ will probably reach beta stage by December. Dean will still work on the game up until then, DayZ wont miss him too much by then.

Dean also hinted that he will leave in the next 2 years back in June 2013. To all the people saying "He is leaving an unfinished game for us to play" He isn't, he is still here working hard on it.

Calyx I have never heard of this "Dean", is he good?

Why do you continue to comment on articles you have no idea about.

OT: I'm really going to miss him. He really listens and communicate with the community through Reddit. It's a odd to see a developer that cares these days.

Not to mention the fact the article says he's the creator, haha. How do you like to play a game, read head line news on it, and neglect to figure out who created and ran it?

I've only briefly played DayZ, but it seemed really cool. Hope who ever takes over does a good job!
