Rockstar cracking down on GTA Online cheaters

Guilty players may be placed in isolated cheater pools or banned altogether

Rockstar has announced plans to crack down on Grand Theft Auto Online cheaters.

The studio is to penalise players who, in recent weeks, have exploited the free-roaming multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto 5 by generating and distributing "game-breaking amounts of in-game cash". Guilty players may be placed in isolated cheater pools or banned from playing the game altogether.

On Monday, Rockstar released a GTA Online patch designed to boost anti-cheating measures and squash GTA$ and Reputation Points exploits.

GTA Online was then taken offline for maintenance starting January 15/16 at 9pm EST/2am GMT. Rockstar said on Thursday that the maintenance period, which is not expected to exceed 24 hours, will be used to remove counterfeit GTA$ from the game's economy.

"Anyone that innocently received GTA$ as a result of these exploits but did not engage in cheating to acquire it will not face any further action - the funds will just be removed , and you'll be able to keep any items you currently own," the studio said.

"Those who actively engaged in cheating and exploiting the game in this manner will, however, be subject to in-game penalties at our discretion. This may include being placed in isolated cheater pools or banned from GTA Online altogether.

"Should you ever encounter someone in GTA Online that appears to be taking advantage of exploits in your session, we ask that you alert us directly via the in-game reporting functionality. In the Pause menu, under the Online tab, select Players and scroll to the offending player. From there, select Report and choose Exploits from the violation options.

"We're grateful for the community's continued support in dealing with these issues and once again apologize to anyone that has had their Grand Theft Auto Online experience sullied by these exploits that broke the game's natural flow. Please stay tuned for lots more news about GTA Online in the weeks ahead."

I'm glad they did this, the online servers will be a lot better now. Hopefully no more large exploits are found.

They will remove the fake cash? How would they tell if the cash was real or fake? I have around 3 million legit and then I got into a lobby and a guy gave me a few billion. How would they know if it was legit or not? They will loose a lot of players if they remove money from people.

Online has just been a big mess! I can't believe Rockstar is banning people with a lot of cash, half of the time, it isn't their fault! It's not like we can reject the money or anything... they just need to reset online in general and have heists come out.

This is ridiculous, its a game this isnt real life, and the economy, psh. That statement about it breaking my game lol.

They need to reset the economy, I don't know how, if possible. But it needs to be done.

ODST What's the point of in-game currency? People are bound to exploit it because of it's difficulty and nobody has enough time to get to level 120 for a mini gun or level 70 so they can buy a tank. The game is fun until it's too serious and then it's not what made GTA IV online so great.

Rockstar sold out. They added those cash cards so they made it extremely hard to get money. They were the last good company left then they go and do this. I'm usually against mods being brought into multiplayer but I'm glad this money mod happened. That's what they get for selling out.

What is the point in taking the money away? All the people most likely have already bought all the stuff they wanted and upgraded their cars to insane power. I stayed legit in the game for a month got an apartment and then was completely broke. Then i did the car selling glitch maybe 100 times and bam living the high life in LS
