Activision: Call of Duty: Ghosts has shipped $1 billion

4.7
The video game industry is now a battle of billion dollar launches, with Activision announcing this morning that Call of Duty: Ghosts has shipped a billion dollars worth of the game into retail. The semi-awkward victory lap comes on the day Activision is set to announce its second quarter results.

"Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation," said Activision CEO Bobby Kotick as part of the announcement – a very, very accurate assessment. "And in the last 12 months, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, including its digital content, generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year. Although it is too early to assess sell-through for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it's launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular."

The billion dollar mark was likely chosen to contrast the game's accomplishment with that of Grand Theft Auto 5, which sold $1 billion to consumers in three days, where as Call of Duty shipped a billion dollars worth of game to retail stores. Call of Duty: Ghosts was the "most pre-ordered" game at GameStop this year.

That's a fair bit of money that they are aiming to make. $1 Billion is an insane amount of money

That's nice for Call of Duty, but I doubt they'll sell more than GTA.

I don't think Call of Duty: Ghosts deserves to beat, or come close to GTA V's 1 billion dollar mark in just 3 days!

I hope ghosts doesn't come close to rockstar's GTA 5 sales.

-InsanelyAwesome- It is not the largest gaming franchise GTA is still much much much bigger always has been always will be. If GTA V released on more than just 2 gaming platform's it probably would of brought in a lot more than $1billion on first day

didnt bring in $1 billion first day it was in the first 3 days.

Oh yeah? Well you can't read.

Grand Theft Auto V was met with high commercial success. Within 24 hours of its release, the game generated more than $800 million in worlwide revenue, equating to approximately 11.21 million copies sold for Take Two,[127] exceeding the previous first-day sales record of $500 million set by Call of Duty: Black Ops II. The numbers nearly doubled analysts' expectations for the title.[128][129] Three days after the release, the game had surpassed $1 billion in sales, making it the fastest selling entertainment product in history. 'Shipped' and 'sold' are two entirely different terms. By shipping $1 billion to retail, they have made $1 billion worth of COD: Ghosts copies available for purchase. Contrast that with GTA V that sold $800 million on day one and eclipsed the $1 billion mark on day three. By far, the sale data is more impressive than the ship data.

It never said that $1 billion was actually sold though.

Nice to see ghosts do well on the market despite how many people were saying that they weren't going to buy the game.
