Microsoft says Gears of War would need to be reimagined for Xbox One

4.5
Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer is interested in bringing Gears of War to Xbox One, but has suggested that fresh life would first need to be breathed into Epic's series.

2006's Gears of War, 2008's Gears of War 2, 2011's Gears of War 3 and 2013's Gears of War Judgment were all published by Microsoft on Xbox 360. But the most recent title, which was the first to be developed by People Can Fly, a subsidiary of series creator Epic Games, didn't live up to the platform holder's expectations, Spencer suggested during an interview with IGN.

"I want to find a great Gears game. And I thought we did a good job with Judgment, but I don't think it hit the level of quality that we saw in the previous games," he said. "I think review scores showed that, sales showed that.

"I really think we'd need to take a step back with Epic and think about, I wouldn't call it a reboot because I think that's an overused term, but think about where that franchise goes and how to expand what it was. I'd love to have that conversation.

"I do talk to the Epic guys often. They're also busy right now. I think that they've said that Gears is kind of on the back burner for them. So I think it would be a situation when the opportunity came up at the right time it'd be great to sit down with them.

"They're again the right team to work on that game. Trying to find another team to do that game I think is possible, but you'd want to make sure you did that very carefully along with them to make sure we had the right thing in place.

"But I think that franchise would need to be, not reworked, but you'd think about how to expand the universe and what people are doing. Maybe make it more gritty, I don't know. You'd want to do something with it because I think it did kind of run its course on 360. And it was a great success on 360, but it doesn't quite have the story arc of a thing like Halo or something, at least the way it's played out in the games and I think we'd want to pump that up."

Ry-Nasty I don't know about you guys but the campaign is what made these games for me, not the multiplayer. I loved every single one of the characters. I agree with you "imbarnett" but I think that describes only the multiplayer aspect of each game.

Practiced
imbarnett GoW1 was great, but seemed unfinished.
GoW2 was so grimy and hardcore looking, but lag completely **** that game over.. HARD.
GoW3 Beta? Awesome, literally the best video game I'd ever played..
GoW3, alright.. seemed to get a little mainstream, easier and more for the casual player.
Judgement, horrible, horrid, gross, disgusting. Never again.

That's around one of the most accurate things I've ever read..

Haha, completely agree with imbarnett. GoW 1 and 2 were both an extremely host advantage type game but it was sort of dimmed down more in GoW 2 than 1. Those laggy matches were terrible if you ended up coming across someone that had garbage connection. I really miss GoW 1 and 2, I own both the games but playing them now doesn't feel the same anymore.

But.... why? It doesn't seem necessary.

Amp- I never really got into Gears. But I really liked the first one. Hopefully it goes good on the new console.

The sequels are pretty good in my opinion. I never really got fully into the online part of them though

I never tried judgement, but what really set it apart from the other 3? I loved 1 & 2.

What made it different is that they tried to make it like COD. They changed how you swapped weapons to Y and they made loadouts unlike the other ones. The maps they had weren't the best either.

Judgement was really bad imo

ZENU96 I really loved the franchise, can't wait to see what they have for us when they make one for the next gen console.

I'm a pretty big fan of gears of war excluding Judgement. I'm interested on the direction they will be taking if they decide to make a Gears game for the Xbox One
