Microsoft will continue to support Xbox 360 for three years

Microsoft will continue to support Xbox 360 long after Xbox One launches this November.

Xbox chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi said at the Citi Global Technology Conference yesterday: "If you look at Xbox 360 that platform [has] lasted for seven to eight years and it's going to go for another three years. It's incredibly profitable now in the tail."

Mehdi went on to assure consumers not yet ready to jump on the next-gen bandwagon that there will be plenty of new games released for Xbox 360.

"We are going to continue to invest in Xbox 360 and the two devices can work in concert," he said. "So it isn't just like the day we ship Xbox One, Xbox 360 won't work, we will continue to support it. In fact, we are going to ship over 100 new games on Xbox 360, so you will still be able to play your games, just not on the same exact box."

Mehdi also said Xbox One is currently in full production after Microsoft boosted the system's CPU from 1.6 GHz to 1.75 GHz.

Xbox One will launch in 13 markets this November priced at £430 / €500 / $500. The Xbox One release date will be announced later today, a pair of UK retailers suggested this morning.

It is a bit of a shame that the Xbox 360 will pretty much become redundant in three years, but I suppose that the time frame gives all Xbox gamers a considerable amount of time to upgrade the the Xbox One.

570 I could careless in 3 years I might possibly buy the Xbox One maybe the price will drop from 500 to 200 or so.

Yeah i'm doing the same, i'm gonna wait mabey a year or so and see if it's worth buying and get it but for now i'm sticking with the 360.

Boar 3 Years seems about right, with the rise in hardware over years I see it being outdated by then anyway.

In 3 years time i could see many people transitioning to the Xbox One regardless, i think 3 years is a pretty good time frame to phase the console out. That will be 10 years of supporting the Xbox 360

Impossibility hopefully they dont shut down

They wont shut it down, they will just stop supporting (making new games for) the xbox 360 in 3 years time

I wonder what will happen to 360s live service, will it stop being there or will they continue to host the live.

I say this because the Ones live is going to new servers.

Considering the Xbox 360 is still around 200 after 7 years that won't happen I don't think, it might drop a bit but not that dramatically in 3 years.

I don't even need 3 years. Only thing I need from the 360 is GTA V.

ZENU96 Well that's kind of dumb, but i'm sure i will have a xbox one before the 3 years are over.

There will very likely be people who are still using the Xbox 360 in 3 years time so i don't see how it's dumb. Even if you get the Xbox One chances are you will go back to your 360 and plan an online match now and again
