Xbox Live real-world currency rollout starts 'late 2013'

4.5
Microsoft will begin the Xbox Live Marketplace's transition from Microsoft Points to real-world currencies in 'late 2013', the company has confirmed.

"Our goal is to make this transition as easy as possible for you," it said in an update issued today.

"After the next Xbox 360 system update, when you go to buy something or redeem a Microsoft Points card or code on your console with your Microsoft account, we'll add to your account an amount of currency equal to or greater than the Xbox Marketplace value of your Microsoft Points, which will be retired," it explained.

Those with MS Points Cards after the transition will still be able to redeem them via Xbox Live for "equal to or greater" sums of local currency, assured Microsoft.

The company has also confirmed plans to release new 'Xbox Gift Cards' available in your local currency through online retailers and in local retail stores.

The new Xbox dashboard update and its real-world currency has been in beta testing in recent weeks. Uproar was sparked when testers noticed the significantly diminished value of their MS Points when converted to real money, but Microsoft was quick to clarify that the inflated beta test prices were "an unintended error".

If they are going to be selling the prepaid cards then how do the stores make money ? ms sell them cheaper to the stores to make the profit or the stores sell them for more ?

Hate this i get 20/30% savings through mspoints, though i have one question is it actually going to be any figure or just 5,10,20 etc blocks?

Frog I quite liked the MSP system but I suppose this doesn't really matter, just means people won't really be able to sell MSP codes any more xD

Yea, But im sure they will sell something like PSN just like regular money

They're doing it pretty much how most places do it, you basically just buy a code to redeem money instead of points, and when you want to add funds to your account on the console/site you just add money. It's pretty much the same, but it's an easier concept for new people so it makes sense for them to change.

Yea that makes more sense now

I like the idea of a real-world currency. You'll have a better concept of how much you are paying for something.
