Microsoft 'looking into' including headsets with Xbox One

Microsoft is "looking into" bundling headsets with Xbox One console, according to Albert Penello, senior director of product planning at the company.

The platform holder has previously said that the Kinect bundled with every Xbox One is intended to provide the console with out-of-the-box in-game chat capabilities, in place of a headset which will be sold separately.

However, Penello's response to a query from a Twitter user indicates Microsoft may be considering the alternative.

In May it was reported that Xbox One's proprietary data port is not compatible with current-gen gaming headsets. This meant that current headsets by leading accessory manufacturers, including popular high-end headsets from Turtle Beach, will not work with Xbox One.

Microsoft later said it is working on a solution to allow third-party peripheral compatibility with Xbox One. A Microsoft Australia spokesperson explained why current peripherals won't work with the Xbox One out of the box:

"The Wireless Controller has been redesigned to allow for higher data transfer speed between the controller and the console," said the rep. "This also required creating a new expansion port design for headsets and future controller add-on devices which is different from a standard audio plug input.

"Xbox plans to develop solutions in the near future to allow consumers to connect many brands of wired gaming headsets to the Wireless Controller for gaming and chat audio."

Peer Its annoying seeing people complain about speaking into kinect, you have no idea how the new kinect will be like so how can you say it will be crap.

OT: would be awesome if they did :3 or even better turtle beach has an adapter day one for old headsets :p

Exactly, how can you say it won't be? You have no proof saying it's not.

Personally I couldn't care less what they do because I know that the instant my friends and I get the xbox we will get new headsets(turtle beaches, astros, whatever).

It's not a stretch to assume that the kinect will suck for online gaming communication. It has a noise filter to drown out any back ground noise (such as the TV itself, fans, doors slamming, ect) but it is designed to pick up and amplify voices from across a room. If the kinect didn't have the ability to pick up and transfer voices from far away, then it would fail at it's main purpose of being use a voice controller for the system. Having said that there is no way it can tell whos voice is whos and cut people out while your playing a game. If your kids run in screaming or there are people having a conversation in the room, or you have a stereo playing music, it should pick it up and play it through to everyone in your party. That is how the thing was designed, so if it didn't do that during online gaming, it likely isn't going to work very well with anything else.

This is a very smart move by Microsoft, but I hate that they are doing it. It's great because it shows that they are understanding that they are completely backing off their terrible decisions pre E3. I hate that they are making these decisions, because what they were doing was trying to pinch more money out of their client base. They thought everyone would follow along like sheep to what they wanted. Well people didn't and they are paying for it. The problem is that they are not making these changes because they are listening to their "fan base" but because they were listening to their original pre order numbers. The same amount of complaining and uproar from the community and a higher pre order number originally and microsoft users would still be seeing things like DRM and the like.

Please put a mic with the bundle. It would make 500$ even more worth it.
