Samsung gives up; permanently discontinues Galaxy Note7

4.5
It looks like the inevitable has happened: Samsung is permanently discontinuing the Galaxy Note7 smartphone, after repeated manufacturing problems that cause the handsets to catch fire and explode.

After months of frustration, sales halts, lawsuits, massive worldwide recalls and numerous FAA warnings and eventual bans, it had looked like Samsung might be able to put the whole Note7 fiasco behind it. That’s until the replacement units, which were supposed to be safe, also started catching fire.

Now, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Samsung is discontinuing the Galaxy Note7 permanently. This move was expected by many, after just hours ago the company announced it would stop selling the device, and asked users to “power down” their handsets.

As of today Samsung has announced South Korean regulators that it would stop the sale and production of the Note7. The company said:

Taking our customer’s safety as our highest priority, we have decided to halt sales and production of the Galaxy Note7.

Samsung's shares fell yesterday by more than 7% after the company announced it's decision to ask partners to stop selling the device. Shares are expected to continue to tumble today.

Previous reports suggested that the issues with the Note7 handset stemmed from tight deadlines and impulsiveness on Samsung’s part who wanted to get in ahead of Apple’s new iPhones. This was never confirmed by the company, but recent reports suggest the South Korean giant is taking a slower approach with the upcoming Galaxy S8.

You'd think a company like Samsung would be able to find a solution but looks like this phone just wasn't meant to be....all they can do now is learn from there mistakes and make their next product better

these phones were amazing but it unfortunately blows up, but is really a shame became I would of like buy one these. but when I heard the news the Samsung note 7 phone blow up, it felt saying it's not fair.

The phones themselves were actually very nice. It's a shame they couldn't find a solution for this.

NinjaActually I need some of these to use as smoke bombs.

Don't think being near a "smoke bomb" made up of plastic, metal and chemicals is even remotely a good idea.

This was honestly not surprising, I am surprised they waited this long however. After the amount of issues with the phone exploding and then the article about it blowing up in a guy's jeep, I would have expected them to just halt production on them at that time. Either way, this is kind of a good thing for people interested in stock. I'm sure Samsung's stock is literally in the shitter right now, you could probably get some stock for cheap and once they release their new phone whenever that may be, if no problems arise and stock soars back up, you can cash out on some decent profit.

Pretty crazy that they sold so many phones that could blow up. You'd think they would've tested them out more to make sure there were no problems.

Pretty disappointing to be honest. Note7 had so much potential and was such an elegant looking device. Looks like I'll be keeping my iPhone 7+ on order.
