Xbox One S will not support 4K pass-through

4.1
The Xbox One S is not only Microsoft’s attempt to address some of the more common issues that plagued the system’s original model (such as its bulky design) and help the Xbox One get a second chance at retail success, but it is also supposed to be the console that finally allows Xbox fans to experience true 4K video playback.

We say “supposed to” because recent reports have revealed that the Xbox One S is not quite as 4K capable as we were lead to believe.

As it turns out, the Xbox One S does not support 4K pass-through. Typically, when a 4K receiver supports pass-through, that means that you are able to plug in a third-party 4K streaming device such as an Amazon Fire TV into it and export the signal into 4K. In other words, pass-through is what allows the content you are streaming from such a device to ultimately appear on your television in 4K resolution.

This is not possible to do with the Xbox One S. If you try to plug a 4K streaming device into it, you won’t actually be able to view any content coming from that device in 4K. While the HDMI export used to hook your Xbox One up to your 4K TV works just fine, its import slot will not transfer that 4K signal.

How will this affect you as a user? That depends on your personal needs. As the Xbox One S is a self-contained streaming device that supports many apps such as Netflix and Hulu (as well as Ultra 4K Blu-Ray discs via the built-in drive) you may not actually need to use a separate streaming device in the first place to get most of your content.

This is more of an issue for anyone that wants to take advantage fo any exclusive content offered by these devices, or those who own a 4K streaming device through their satellite provider (such as DIRECTV) and want to be able to use the Xbox One S as the central hub for their entertainment center as it has previously been advertised to be. Indeed, the biggest drawback to this design is that it makes watching certain 4K TV broadcasts on the Xbox One S essentially impossible.

Microsoft has commented that they are able to add 4K pass-through functionality to the Xbox One S via a firmware update, but currently, do not plan to do so until 4K broadcasts become more widespread and the demand for this feature grows.

This isnt really a problem. So you cant stream youtube videos from your pc to your xbone in 4K... So what!! You csn watch things on netflix in 4k, you can play games in 4k and watch 4k movie discs. Dont see this being an issue, and I often stream from my pc to my xbone

There is literally no need to plug in a Roku or Fire into you Xbox, televisions have multiple inputs for a reason its not that hard to hit input on your remote and switch to one of the options.

FriskyPanda Lol the last generation of consoles was good. But all this misleading of information is pathetic lmao. I switched to PC and I don't have any problems like all the console peasants have. Make the switch you will not regret it.

What about the fact that pc crashes way more than console also way more hackers and poorly optimized games, pc gaming is great for the hardcore gamer who cares about graphics but console is cheaper for the casual gamer.

No need to call console users peasants. Some people have consoles for the exclusives. I game on PC but I have an Xbox for Halo, been a fan since Halo 2. And 4k isn't a big deal no need to trip on it.

Lost Hopefully they can find a way to fix this. I know some people that are looking to buy the newer console for 4k. Kinda odd how they advertise it.

It's pretty much lying about their product. It's similar as IF PS4 was marketed as backwards compatible, which they did not, but in reality on plays older games through their streaming service. Another similar case is No Man's Sky multiplayer aspect. There is not a real multiplayer but they said there was.

Multiplayer does not mean full interactivity. It means there are other players in your session. Imagine you're playing GTA V and you and another player are on polar opposites of the map. You're still playing multiplayer, but he's not there with you. Now put that on the same scale as No Man's Sky.

Did any of you even read the whole article or just the first 2 paragraphs? The console is capable of 4k playback from blu-rays and any streaming app downloaded that supports 4k video. You just can't plug a 4k streaming device into the xbox and have it pass through the xbox at 4k. Like they even said its a firmware update to allow it, its just not super necessary to work on right now.

I suggest reading whole articles before commenting or jumping to conclusions. But I guess you gotta get them posts up. idiots.

also, no mans sky has no multiplayer. He said you would be able to see someone and play with them, interact with them. you can't.
