Microsoft is thinking “beyond console generations” with Xbox Scorpio

4.4
Xbox director Albert Penello on how the Scorpio will avoid the “disruptive” console transition.

In an interview on The Inner Circle podcast, Microsoft’s Albert Penello shared the company’s thoughts on the Scorpio.

“You hear us talking about thinking beyond console generations,” he said. “It’s not the idea that you don’t want to do consoles anymore or that there’s not going to be more performance. But if you go back and look at console generations, they’re always super exciting when something new comes out, but they’re super disruptive.”

Penello refers to the difficulties developers face when transitioning to new hardware, as well as those faced by consumers.

“The idea is, can we smooth that out? Can this be more about a family, can we think beyond, ‘We’re gonna do this one and then stop and then start all over again.'”

He goes on to describe the next slew of Xbox consoles as tiered products for different customers.

“Do [customers] care about price? Do they care about performance? Do they care about 4K? It doesn’t matter, you can’t go wrong. Your games are going to work, your accessories are going to work. I think that’s just a different way of approaching it.”

Project Scorpio is slated for a December 2017 release.

Microsoft is getting high smelling their own farts again. Id say 3 more years and they will put out the next gen and expect people to shell out twice for the same console. Hopefully they will have learned not to try anything silly like they did on Xbone. But then again... I'm just a High School graduate. WTF do I know about learning from mistakes?

I honestly cannot wait for this, Microsoft has officially done it.

They already announced it's expensive, more so than the normal release of the first Xbox One drop. It's a luxury console. Very powerful and, useless without a 4K TV in the sense it was made for 4K resolution. A 4K TV alone with run you a few hundred, and that's still a cheap brand at a low size.

Again, luxury. I'm willing to bet, tv+console, you'll be spending roughly 1K USD. Again, that's my speculation. Knowing consoles, they'll cut corners somewhere and cheap down items that shouldn't be. They advertise 4K at 60FPS but we'll probably see it at 30-40 FPS.

I want to feel sorry for consumer that buy a 4K TV. it's an absolute gimmick that shouldn't even be on the market. A 4K image looks worse on a 4K screen than a 1080p screen. Also, most TV channels don't even output 1080p yet. It's a total marketing gimmick and people fall for it so bad.

Have you even seen a 4k tv in real life? It looks a lot better then 1080p and even the xbox one s when gaming looks better with a 4k tv 1080p. A 4k image looks like your actually there and if you think it looks worse or is a "gimmick" then maybe you should go to the store aND look again. I personally love mine and everyone I show it to is astonished at the crystal clear images.

Yes I have. They're nice, but they're still a gimmick unless you can fork out for a service that gives you 4K source, which also requires huge amounts of bandwidth. Another 2 premiums clagged on top... No... One S does not produce 4K game output. The Xbox UI is 4k, not the games. It stretches (upscale) the 1080p (or whatever it is) games to 4k, which will look horrid. Everyone knows you cannot get high picture quality by stretching a bitmap image. Yeah, I could go to the store and stare at a nicely taken 4K image that was taken from a 4K Camera. It looks nice, but it's not what you get when sitting at home.

Like I said, it's still a marketing gimmick that should have waited.

I work in sales. Especially TV sales. I disagree. Buying a 4k now while prices are slashed (due to the fact of less need for it currently) is a wise investment. There are 4k blu ray players and now more common 4k dvds. 4k netflix. 4k on direct tv or dish not sure. This Olympics was supposed to be 4k stream, not sure if it happened though.
